hi my name is lamp dog. i have recently started working lurchers again and i have to say it is fantastic. i got my dog last august when he was 10 weeks old and started working him at 10mths. he is a saluki 25%, staff 12.5% and the rest is greyhound some might say he is a little big for bunnies at 27.5" to the shoulder but he seems to be working fine and as a pet he`s amazing with the kids and spends most of his time hogging the sofa on these long hot days. i just wanted to say hi to all i have been looking for like minded people to chat and seek advise and hopefully give a little as you can never know too much or know it all. i have one problem at the mo i can`t seem to get round, my dog (jet) will not hand over the goods when he`s caught, he`ll come back to me but won`t let go, is there a remedy?, i`ve tried food, stern talk but no joy help would be greatly appreciated. and once again hi to all like minded people

Hi Lamp dog WELCOME to K9

I don't rabbit hunt but if my dogs chase and kill a rabbit it wouldn't bother me, at least I don't think it would :b

as to your dog not giving up it's trophy you could tempt him with dried liver as I've heard this is irresitable to them or even cheese cut into cubes,

failing that my dogs would bend over backwards for cooked bacon pieces (kept in a small plastic bag of cause and not just in your pocket) lol

this works a treat for recall also, as soon as they hear the bag rustle they come bounding up for some, they go nut's for the smell too,

good luck anyway

 Welcome to k9 Lampdog

hi Lamp dog ,try just poping your finger into the side of his mouth and press firmly down on the side or under neeth his tongue and give him the order "To give"but be carefull not to hurt him . This is better that having a tug of war with him and once he knows what you want you will have no trouble.

PS,

TAKE NO NOTICE OF PEOPLE SAYING YOUR DOG IS TOO BIG, ITS NOT THE SIZE THAT COUNTS, MORE WHATS INSIDE. (THATS A TYPICAL MALE STATEMENT IF IVE EVER HEARD ONE :D ) IVE WORKED 28-30 INCH PURE BRED DEERHOUNDS ON RABBITS, NEVER HAD ONE THAT COULDNT DO THE TASK
