Hi,

New to this and dont usually do the forums but need advice and help, I have a staffy 13 years old, back legs are going and he can only walk for ten mins, going blind and deaf too, couple of accidents in his bed last few weeks and just looks so sad, I know what I should do but love him like my kids, any advice available, Ive done the vets tablets and there was no difference in two months of him having them, how do I know for certain its time as struggling here

gone dead skinny over past two months too but is eating and drinking fine

With all the meds and all the treatments avialble its possible to keep them for longer but stop and ask yourself...

Who are you doing it for? Him, because his life will be improved by this treatment or yourself because you cannot let go?

Dogs are wonderful compainions and letting them go without suffering and with dignity is the most loving thing we can do for them. We hold that responsibilty in our hands , yes its hard but seeing them suffer is harder.

A tough time for sure, I have an elderly dog too and know this decision is on the horizon for me... You know your dog and have to ask yourself about his quality of life now and be kind to yourself when you have to be kind to your dog, sadly only you can make this decision...

I am so sorry, it really is such a tough decision.

There is a scale used to assess our pets' quality of life when they are seriously ill. I understand it was developed for cancer care but the principles apply to any life limiting condition. What is their quality of life in relation to Hurt, Hunger, Hydration, Hygiene, Happiness, Mobility and More good days than bad days. You can find more detail here

There is a saying, better a week too soon than a day too late. It's a terrible decision but one that responsible owners have to face. If it helps, the Blue Cross has a pet bereavement counselling service.

Sorry to hear about your hard decision @dtm19721972 - It sucks that you have to make that decision.

I totally agree with @Mad Murphy - it's always going to be harder for us as humans but for your boy, he's had a wonderful life and focus on that as much as you can.

Hope he has the best week ever x

Be with him , hold him, tell him you love him. Let his passing be with grace and dignity but without pain or fear.
I have always held back the tears until afterwards so they only know peace and love..
Its awful its hard but letting go is the greatest act of love there is...

This post and the answers made me cry. Dudley is still only young and I have made arrangements for him if I go first. Really dread what will happen if I have to lose him.
I hope you get support in the loss of your beloved dog.
My daughter still has the ashes of our only other dog, she died when my daughter was 19. She is 43 now and has had other dogs. But she can't part with Shadows remains.

there is a saying a week to early is better than a day to late.......... this is the hardest part of owning our pets, but we need to do what is best for them at the time they need it the most.

I also find its best if you can get all your ducks in a row before you make the decision, do you want it to happen at home, or the vets, are you going to cremate him, and will you let the vet see to that or take him to the pet crematorium yourself, for me it eases the passing, I try to have them done at home, I have my vet and the crem on speed dial so when the time comes I can arrange everything myself. sadly my last girl was a bit to hurried so we had to take her in to the vets ( i like to do it at home usually ) , but I still called the pet crem and told them we would be there sometime in the AM , we took her to the vets, we lay with her on the floor, with her on her best blanket and talked to her all the way through the procedure , then we wrapped her in her blanket, put her in the car and took her to the crem...then picked her up later in the day.

thinking of you in this awful time,

So very sorry to read this. You are obviously the very best sort of loving owner. My heart goes out to you.

We had to let our 10 yo spaniel go 18 months ago- he had cancer so there was no hope. As other people have said we gave him the very best day- took him to a favourite place and gave him the all the spoiling we could. My lovely friend, a vet, came in the evening to help him over the rainbow bridge.

This is what you'll do for your boy. The day will stay with you for ever. The love you have helps you find the strength to get through it and afterwards you'll know- however it hurts- you have kept your side of the bargain we all make with loved dogs. Take care of yourself as well.

So sad to read this. Its one off the hardest decisions to make. Our dogs mean such a lot to us, i sadly had to make that decision with my best friend its tough, but one thing i promised him was I'd never let him suffer. You're doing the right thing for your baby x
Take care

That's it I'm off, pass the tissues.. I still have my last dog Danny's ashes in the bedroom with a happy photo of him stuck to the box... he made 16 and died at home, curled up, in his sleep. I lit a candle by him and we said our goodbyes. My cat walked around the spot where he had laid for nearly 2 weeks. If only all our animals could leave us like that eh. I'm sure we'll all be thinking of you and your boy on Monday...

Another one with the ashes still under the bed here too!

And yes will be thinking of your day on Monday and sending healing vibes.
