Hi everyone

Not been on for a while due to work commitments  but im hoping for someones help

Molly came into her first proper season on 31 July this year and the bleeding lasted about 3 weeks - since then she has become very protective of her toys/bones etc - she could be sleeping in her bed and if we get up from our seats she jumps up to get them and paces up and down with them in her mouth. She also became very grumpy at night - if we attempt to pet her when she's sleeping she bares her teeth and snarls (this is happenning on a nightly basis) We put this down to the season and decided to get her spayed a couple of months later on vets advice. We've just had her done nearly 3 weeks ago and the grumpiness has continued - the vet has said she could be having a phantom pregnancy and has given her a weeks course of drops the will counteract the hormone thats making her believe she's had pups - we're 4 days into the course and she's still snapping. Ive to take her back next week and the vet said she may need another course - i just wondered if anyone's experienced this as its really distressing for us to see her behave like this - she's so fun-loving and affectionate the rest of the time. :(

She's a whippet/collie cross and has just turned 1 year old.

I would find a different vet. It is quite normal for bitches to get bit stroppy before, during and after season. It is also quite normal to have some hormonal reactions even if they were not mated, these can range from just hardly perceptible to full blown phantom pregnancy, with lactation etc. But it is not normal to be snarling and snapping at owners. When my bitches have their pups they do not like strangers in the house, they do not like our other animals in the same room, might snap at the cat if she tries to have a peep too early. But I can certainly handle my bitches and their pups without any sign of aggression.

Now that Molly is spayed, she has no ovaries to produce hormons, what exactly s the vet giving her? I would look for other causes of her grumpiness, and i think second opinion would be a good idea. :luck: :luck: :luck:
