We have a male, neutered cocker poo who is 6 years 9 months old. For past two months he’s had chronic diarrhoea necessitating several trips to the vets. He’s had antibiotics and pain pain killers. He’s now on steroids, probiotics, gradual diet change recommended - Royal Canin Hypoallergenic, and probiotic sachet added to food. I’m also giving three smaller meals per day. He’s been howling in pain passing faeces although it’s slightly better with pain relief. He’s had bloods done - all ok, faecal check - all ok, scan - all ok, vitamin B12 test - all ok. He’s now stopped eating the Royal Canin Hypoallergenic and I’ve woken to another mess from overnight. I don’t know what else to try. I’m desperate as he’s lost nearly 2kg so far. He can’t be left for even the shortest time as he needs to be let out so frequently, and it’s so debilitating for him and becoming a nightmare to deal with. The vet is treating for Inflammatory Bowel Disease but says we would need to spend more money on operating to do a biopsy which he thinks can’t be done by endoscopy. We don’t want to put him through that if diet alone may be the cause and we don’t have the £4,000 they’ve estimated on top of the £1,000 we’ve already paid (no insurance). Any help or advice would be so appreciated. Thanks for reading!

Hello, Welcome.
OMG, Royal Canin is a very poor quality food for our dogs ! And another problem is that our vets (or very few) have NO qualifications to recommend our dogs diets. Please read the attachment.
There are quiet a lot of dogs these days reported to have the same problems, all of which were on grain based kibble diets.
Grains are very often the problem as our dogs stomachs are not designed to digest these products, so to go Grain free could quiet clearly solve your problem.
We have friends who have dogs that have had tummy problems including a couple with Cockapoos, they were changed to a raw diet and their problems were solved.
These problems can start at any time of life and are mainly caused by by diets loaded with Grains, please be aware that RICE is also a grain !
"Natures Menu" produce very nice frozen meat meals which are convenient and clean to use (no blood or mess! ). Most pet stores with a freezer supply this product or products very similar, the "Natures Menu" variety of "Country Hunter" is probably their best range of products with no grain or Rice.
There is a lovely kibble product "Millies Wolfheart",that can be purchased online (delivery included), their products are Grain free and their customer services are very helpful.
I have fed raw products for well over 40 years and have never had any tummy problems or allergies. The product rears new puppies and all ages up into their elderly years (the same for all life stages).
I always suggest to start and probably stay on their lowest protein level "Alert or Forerunner" a 40/60 product.

Unless you have full confidence in your vet, I think I'd be asking for a referral to a vet specialist - they might have a better idea of the most likely cause. At least if they also recommended the operation, you'd know that it was necessary.

A Holistic vet is more likely to be able to help !

Thank you so much “ExcuseMe” for replying and the advice given. I was recommended by the vet RC Hypoallergenic or Hills ZD (I think) but was advised Hills is less palatable. I have looked into feeding raw or perhaps batch cooking my own food. If introducing a new, raw diet then do you think I’ll again need to introduce very gradually? He hasn’t produced any solid stools whatsoever since 4 November so really we having nothing to lose. I have to clean his backside and slather sudocrem on at least twice a day due to sores. He’s really going through it, bless him and my quality of life is plummeting too as I cannot leave the house, it’s on my mind constantly and I’m greeted with a mess to clean up every morning, so I really need to do something as this can’t continue indefinitely as he’s losing weight and his energy levels have declined. I really appreciate your help. Thank you.

What were you feeding him before the problems started?

My concern with trying different diets - including raw - is that he could have an undiagnosed condition which is never going to be fixed by diet alone, and this is what you really need to get to the bottom of. Raw feeding may be worth a try, though. We have a thread about it here, but do ask if you have any questions after reading it: Raw feeding You might want to start with a protein source that he's not had before, e.g. fish.

There is absolutely no scientific evidence that homeopathy has any effect at all, in people or animals. Plenty of anecdotal evidence, but this has never been replicated in any rigorous study. On the other hand, it certainly won't do any harm as long as you don't try it instead of treatment with a decent evidence base.

I'm sorry, I used the wrong word in my previous post.
I should have used the word "HOLISTIC" vet,
and not just homeopathic.
Google, "Dr Nick Thompson" for some good knowledgeable advice.
