I am very interested in whippet pedigrees and past English champions. Hillsdown Fergal has obviously had a major impact on the breed, being the sire and ancestor of many great whippets. I just wondered why he himself was not shown very often and why he never became a Champion if he was such a great example of the breed and passed on such attributes. Wonder if someone in the know could give more information.

JAMES

He did win a RCC under Bobby James whilst a puppy , but then Phillip had a serious back injury , hence he wasnt shown much, if at all , after that 8)

I don't know whether or not this is true, but I heard that Fergal was one of those dogs who didn't enjoy the show ring so was retired early? Obviously, if his breeder/owner had a serious back injury at the time that could also be the reason.

I had the pleasure of meeting my fellow Sheffielder mr. Moran Healy on 2 occasions at Crufts and asked him the same question regarding Hillsdown Fergal. He told me that due to illness there was no time to show him. He also told me that he was off to live or spend the winters in Goa. and if I remember correctly that his daughterwas keeping a few whippets. Regards to all
