Whippet racing has surprisingly been in times past been very popular in London and the South East, I suppose because people yearned to be out in the countryside, like many years ago Londoners used to flock to Kent to go hop picking...sadly all these things changed, as they have across the country.
Whippet racing was suffering in this area untill Terry Brett and Jimmy Watson (Rch Between Us) formed the Charlton And SE WRC in the year 2000. The first racing took place at Charlton Rugby Club, with just twelve members, however the space was limited, but it was the start of something that was going to grow. The members at Charlton entered the monthly prize draw at the rugby club and won £625. This money enabled Sheila and Arthur Webb to buy and position a container at the club's new site in Thurrock, Essex. It was a hard slog convincing the council (as they own the land) about the benefits of whippet racing, and how family's partcipate together, but eventually a new venue was found. Since then the club has grown from strength to strength, with now over 40 members and even more dogs. The club atmospere is always fun and jovial at club racing, and the success of the clubs dogs can be put down to this, as everybody try's to help one another, long may this continue.
This June (11/12th) the club will holding a weekend event. On the Saturday a Top Ten event will be held for the Sup. Rch Snow Fox trophy, along with a non points event for consolation racing and the Rch Between Us trophy which will be sponsored by Chudleys.
On the Sunday the club is extremley pleased to be hosting the Jack Cadman, this is the 1st major BWRA event to be held at the SE WRC, and all members will be working hard to make everyones visit enjoyable.
Entertainment on the Saturday night will consist of a disco/kareoke, with prizes for the best fancy dress, a bingo and quiz will be organised for the Sunday night. these events will be held in the Thurrock Rugby Club, who have supported us well during the last few years.
The local area also boasts two of the UK's biggest shopping centre's (Lakeside and Bluewater), along with good access to many other attractions. Along with that, the local town Grays, seems to have a record number of takeaways, some of which are pretty good.
Anyone wishing to use the grounds for their caravans and tents will be allowed on the grounds from Friday 10th untill Monday 13th. Pre-booking is required, and these details will be published in the Whippet News.
Regards
