Hi everyone
I am the proud owner of Quincy a loveable Newfoundland. It is through Quincy that I designed and created the 'Quincys mobility harness' and this in turn led me to design and develop the 'GenX no pull harness' .
To tell you a bit about my Quincy - In 2003 Quincy had to have his right hind leg amputated. He was only 2 years old at the time. I wanted to give Quincy the best possible chance to adapt to life with only three legs which i think we would agree would be a real challenge for such a large dog. So I built a dog hydrotherapy swimming pool for Quincy as I knew hydrotherapy would be an excellent way to build his muscles and to improve his balance. It worked wonders for Quincy. He is now 12, still fit and healthy and really enjoys life.
Having rehabilitated Quincy I wanted to help other dogs. Since 2004 I have been doing hydrotherapy free of charge for a number of animal charities including the RSPCA and Battersea Dog’s Home.
By 2004 I was swimming a large number of dogs with various conditions including CDRM. CDRM is a truly awful degenerative disease that eventually leads to complete paralysis of the back legs. Unfortunately it is very common in German Shepherds. Several German Shepherds had hydrotherapy with me. It was sad as both the owners and I knew that the hydrotherapy was worthwhile but in reality it could only slow down the progression of the CDRM.
One day in October 2010 I was swimming a friend’s German Shepherd who suffered from CDRM. It was that day that the idea of the Quincys mobility harness came to me. I could design a harness for a dog that would also attach to their owner. The owner could then use their own body to take some weight off their dog enabling the dog to walk for much longer and so rebuild wasted muscles.
Over the next few months I created and tested various prototypes which lead to the final design of the Quincys mobility harness that you see today. Although inspired by a special dog with CDRM the mobility harness is perfect for a wide range of other conditions and injuries in dogs including: cruciate ligament injuries, hip and elbow dysplasia, spinal conditions, arthritis and general old age.
I set up my company with one thing in mind; to help dogs and other animals. Right from the start I decided that all of the proceeds from Quincys would be used towards building and running one of the biggest veterinary hospitals in the UK. This hospital would be different though; it would offer free veterinary care to people who have sick and injured pets but couldn’t afford to help them.
I live my life by setting myself goals to achieve; the most important being to nurture my relationship with my wife and family and now my new goal is to strive towards helping people with sick animals.
The truth is millions of pet owners end up putting their animals to sleep simply because their Insurance company refuses to pay anymore or the owner was unable to afford insurance. For an owner this is heart-breaking.
For me my hero is a woman who we should all inspire to - the late Mary Dickin who left behind the wonderful legacy of the PDSA; I would like my animal hospital to be my legacy. The Quincys hospital will be set up to help people with or without insurance to help their sick and injured pets long after I have passed away.
