Hi all,

I'm looking for a whippet bitch to keep my very spoilt :D 10 month old whippet Paula company.

I am in Co Roscommon in Southern Ireland and am home all day so Paula gets my undivided attention at the moment.

She gets on well with other dogs but is rather hyperactive.

Paula loves it when my sister brings her whippet to visit.

Any homecheck that is required would be no problem. I did consider buying a pup but thought that it would be better to offer a home to a girl who needs one. Any new girl would have a home for life - and probably end up just as spoilt as Paula!

you can contact me via email at karenjconnell@gmail.com

Regards

Karen

p.s Paula is the deceptively angelic little girl in the bottom photo. The other photo shows Sassy (my sisters whippet) who has stolen Paula's favourite toy!

welcome to K9 :flowers:

Hi all,

Thank you for the warm welcome to this forum.

I am not in any rush to get another whippet - I am a firm believer in the philosophy of the 'right thing coming along at the right time'.

So,I will wait until the right addition to our family (that's just Paula and me!) comes along. That is another reason why I don't want to buy a pup. I absoluely know that the perfect girl will arrive in my life just as Paula did!

I am originally from UK and my son races greyhounds over here in Ireland. He lives about 15 minutes away from me so I always had somewhere to go for a 'dog fix'. I had no plans to get a whippet but here she is!

My sister bought her as a friend for her whippet Sassy, there is also a old chap who is a Rhodesian Ridgeback in her faimily. Jarvis, the Ridgeback, who is the most placid guy you could wish to meet, could not cope with Paula's refusal to listen to him when he told her to leave him alone. So, unwittingly Paula caused mayhem in my sisters home. Anyway, when P was about 4 months old my sister went to UK on holiday and P came to stay with me - she never went home!

That's how I 'inherited Paula!

So, as you can see, the 'powers that be' sent me my perfect dog - she makes sure I get a couple of walks daily, she makes sure I get up early enough and she makes me laugh every day!

So, when the time is right Paula will get her sister and I will get another addition to the family. I am now an avid whippet fan.

Regards

Karen

Hello and welcome :)

Paula is gorgeous , hope you get her a sister soon !

Hi Karen

Just letting people know you are looking is definitely the way to go - also put your name on waiting lists at local dogs' homes/ rescues as often whippets are snapped up before they even get a pic on the website! It can also save dogs having the trauma of going into kennels in the first place as you can get home checked now and then when a dog becomes available it could go straight to you.

My Mum and Dad just adopted a 16 week old whippet pup this weekend and it only happened because a friend of a friend knew she was looking so they rang straight waway when they heard of a family who had second thoughts about a whippie only 8 weeks after they got him.

Good luck and welcome to K9! :luck:

if you prefer to "rescue" than to buy a pup, I suggest you keep a look out on the Irish rescue websites, especially http://www.irishanimals.ie

also the ISPCA sites and http://petsireland.invisionzone.ie (as well as following Esty's advice - esp. let nearby dog wardens know to contact you if they ever have a whippet in the pound)

may also be worthwhile doing periodic searches or gumtree, donedeal and buyandsell sites

I was looking at the Dublin SPCA website today and I notice in their "rehomed" page two whippets (or mainly whippet crosses) are listed.

also you could look up the Barmaud kennels in Cty Roscommon. Emma and Jane North-Row have recently started showing whippets again; I think their main breed in recent years has been dachshunds

Thanks for the tips (and the PM). I'll keep an eye on the websites you suggested.

Like I said before, the perfect dog is out there and just waiting for me to go and pick it up!

Hi,

Just a note to say that Paula will be getting a big sister when I return from a trip to UK to see my kids.

My son (who is a greyhound trainer) and I have a greyhound bitch that we have had since she was a pup. She is retired now and has a good litter racing.

She lives in my sons house with another retiree. However, circumstances are such my son can no longer have Molly in the house. So rather than her go back into the kennels, she is coming to me.

Thank you all for your suggestions and interest.

I will post some photos of Molly and Paula when she moves in.

Regards

Karen
