jan is nearly 3 and had her 3rd season 14 weeks ago ,,, again she is having a false pregnancy and the rest of the house is suffering

kobi dare not get too close or he ends up witrh jaws round his head

yet if mouse picks on kobi , jan then goes to his defence and decks mouse

she also has an orange cuddly toy duck that is her " baby "

ive been advised not to encourage her to have it as it will prolong the phantom !!!!

so instead she spends most of the day walking round , crying for it !!!!!!!!!!!!

i have tried star flower oil ,,, evening primrose and it got so bad the first time that she had to have galistop and anitibiotics from the vet

any ideas ???????????????????????????????????????????

get her out and about doing somthing so as to break the cycle.

we go out every night ,, about 3.30 pm ( barring torrential rain as they hate it )

and more at weekends etc when im not working , i only do 4 days a week , 9.30 / 2.30 ,, dogs only left on their own for an hour as my eldest daughter works 2 / 10 so dosent leave untill 1.40 , so i cant say its being left alone or boredom ??????? but who knows what goes through a dogs mind :teehee:

My last girlie had false pregnancy's, :( ( she was 17 when we lost her )

I was adviced to take away all the toys she nursed, which we did and yes she did

cry and whimper and yes we did feel sorry for her but it worked a treat as well as

taking her on more walks at different times and playing with her alot more just to

take her mind off it. All these changes we made had a great effect and usually

with in a week the symptoms wore off.

You do feel cruel taking her toys off her and as she see them as being babies it's

made worse, as the saying goes you have to be cruel to be kind

Hope this helps

Hope the advice I was given works for you too, wishing you luck :luck: :luck: , it's horrid to see your dog look depressed, after a few days you should notice a difference.... well I did and boy was it tuff :(

Anyway on a lighter note, hope to meet you in Feb at Belle view, after reading and talking to people who went I will be there, looking forward to it

Regarding the phantoms,we had a Dane that had them and when they began they were'nt too bad but then each time she came "in" she had a phantom and they just got worse with each season. In the end we had to spey her,we did try to mate her but she never took just more phantoms. She was getting more and more distressed as she got older so in the end it was the right decision for everyone. But such a great shame as she was extremely well bred and would have made a great Mum. :(

If you do not intend to breed from Jan,I would be inclined to spey her as this is safer for her and less worrying for you,as you don't have to worry about depriving her of her "false baby".

I think that Rasberry leaf can be helpful if given through a season. I can't say if it works as ( touch wood) I haven't had the problem here. Dorwest herbs could maybe advise you.

BECAUSE OF HER BREEDING AND HOW WELL SHE IS DOING AT SHOWING I DO INTEND TO HAVE A LITTER FROM HER .

IN THE END IF SHE DOSENT TAKE ETC THEN I WOULD GO DOWN THAT ROUTE , SHE DOSENT SEEM AS BAD TODAY ,, ALL " BABIES HAVE BEEN REMOVED :- "

LONG WALK AND LOTS OF MIND GAMES AND SHE HAS SETTLED DOWN QUITE HAPPILY ,, HOPEFULLY ITS JUST A FEW DAYS OF HER BEING "WEIRD " (w00t)

THAN BACK TO NORMAL . :teehee:

THE LAST 2 SHE HAD WERE VERY MUCH THE SAME AND SHE GOT OVER IT WITHIN A MATTER OF DAYS

WEIRD CREATURES HEY ;)

THANKS FOR YOUR ADVICE ,,, ALL GREATLY APPRECIATED

agree with above about increasing exercise, distracting her and removing surogate babies from her but it might also help if you reduce her food intake a bit while she is having a phantom and just before if you suspect one is likely to occur, this should hopefully help trick her body into concentrating on self preservation and not puppy production, it should also help reduce the chances of her letting down milk if she does have a phantom.

i know that there are some other remedies for reducing phantoms but i will have to go double check them first

hope she is feeling better soon :luck: :luck: :luck:

Awww poor jan hope she's back to normal soon :huggles: :luck: :luck:

You should give Raspberry Leaf tablets from the first sign of her season and continue for 12 weeks (basically until after she would have whelped)

It is a long time but it really is the only way to help a bitch going through a full phantom, it is not easy to treat. Raspberry leaf tablets from Dorwest are actually licensed to treat pseudo-pregnancies.

Hope she is okay :*

I have a bitch with this problem and Pulsatilla worked wonders, but raspberry leaf is good too as long as you dont overdose.

In most cases, raspberry leaf is good, but it didn't suit Poppy at all,in fact, it made her quite poorly :(

I'm glad i found this out before, as i dread to think what could have happened if i'd have given it to her while she was in whelp! :sweating:
