How did you choose your dog's name?

Did you get onto google straight away, or did you look at your dog and think 'he looks like a dave'?

Oreo's story is pretty boring but I will share anyway.....

She had chosen us as her new slaves (I mean owners lol), and we had to wait while the RSPCA did there home checks etc.

It was just over a week between when we decided to take her and when we picked her up and all that time my partner and I would text each other names.

I had read that with any resuce it's a good idea to change there name so that they don't associate their past with there name. Made sence I suppose.

Plus she was already called Lisa. Lisa is a lovely name but it is also the name of my ex and I didn't really fancy standing in a park shouting my ex's name across a field!!

The night before we collected her we were watching TV and an advert came on. It was the one with the little child sitting under a table, with his/her dad showing him how she ate Oreo cookies.

We both looked at each other and pointed at the TV and the rest they say is history.

As luck would have it she is black with a white patch on her chest so it made sence too! lol

Sadly, people think Oreo is a boy's name and refer to her as 'him'.

Daisy my Tibetan Spaniel was named when I first met her as her tiny button nose surrounded by white hairs looked just like a Daisy...she was always a pretty feminine little girl, so suited her name throughout her life

Alfie my old rescue Collie was named after the dog on Heartbeat...just a scruffy mongrel

Bluebell took an entire long journey home to name....She is Black...so confusing to be called Blue...but hey ho, they are my favourite flowers

Molly was named when we got her as a rescue.

Echo, well Echo was just the right name, she was Bluebell's litter sister, and came to live with us aged 5 and a half...so she became Bluebells Echo, as they began at the same place and time, but Echo took a little longer to get here...my sweet little Echo who I miss so much

Our cat is called Toffee and our Jack Parson X is called Dixie............anyone see the theme here? (but both girls)

Our Frenchie is called Winston because he looks like Winston Churchill We had allsorts of names Mr Pickles, Yoda, Wicket, Wookie, Chewy, ET, Chester Winston was the majority vote

before i got him, i called everyone Dude, and this seemed to suit him better than his original name. He responded to it straight away too, so it was easy peasy. I work for some terribly posh ladies, it is so funny to hear them use the word dude.

Funnily enough he also comes to 'Wendy', discovered when my friend was calling her tortoise, and dude came and sat next to her, and gave a paw, and was very pleased with himself. God knows where that came from, i thought perhaps one of his previous owners, also had a Wendy somewhere along the line, so he learnt to come too, who knows?

Billy, and Verity were named when I got them at about 7 months old- Alfie was Aubrey but my husband hated it so he had to change :thumbsup: My first dog I named "Isis" from my favourite Bob Dylan song. Then I had her daughter who was a very jazzy looking fawn/ blue brindle parti colour, so she was "Painter" which was also a dog from one of my books I loved as a child.

Then we had Lentil the Rhodesian Ridgeback... it was only meant to be a silly name because we had a siamese cat called Beans, but it stuck

my brother chose RED for our family dog as his furr was a red/brown type of color. As soon as my brother saw him and said red the dog sort of jumped up and barked.

My poodle Fern is silver and as the silver fern is the emblem of New Zealand where my son stays Fern was the obvious choice .

We had chosen our whippet Evie just before Christmas but were getting her in January . We were travelling to the Isle of Man on Christmas eve and the name Evie came in a flash of inspiration .

Lottie our whippet is black and white and has lots of spots hence the name lottie !

Our whippet Mabel got her name from the fact that Mabel means lovable and she is !

Blaize had a white blaze across her shoulder and Ripples was named after Ripley in Alien - an alien killer..

For the record I am a West Brom fan, and I don't think my girlfriend would be very happy if I named the dog Odemwingie, or other related Albion names especially considering she is an Aston Villa fan!

I don't actually know how we got down to choosing 'Bernie' out of the massive list we compiled. I've always liked human names for animals. (I have a bearded dragon called Brian). I had found all of these names I sort of liked but hadn't really decided on any. I knew I wanted a name with hard consonants and then decided I wanted the name to begin with 'B'... Then I just reeled off some male names and 'Bernie' came out and I instantly loved it.

Lily came from a rescue in Wales, so I named her Lily....our little 'Lily of the valleys'

Babycakes

Murphy was 9 months old when he came to live with us so his existing name stayed with him although he becomes Murphy Alexander when he is naughty!!, Rufus was 8 months old when he came and was called Rupert (Rupie for short by the breeder) my husband sang the Rupert the bear song around the house all night when we got home, I couldn't stand it so he quickly became Rufie to Rufus within a couple of days he answered and it stuck and the middle name Alistair was added as big brother Murphy has a middle name!. My old bitch was 5 and a half when we got her and called Babycakes (honestly) it was her pedigree name aswell. she even got birthday cards posted to our house addressed to 'Miss B Cakes' from my brother who found it hilarious!! Once you got to know her no other name would have suited her, she was an amazing little dog :wub:

babycakes is beautiful, definitley suits her, very hard to say it in a cross voice though, not that you would ever want to, to that face

i think someone should start a thread about what dogs get called when they are in trouble, and when they/we are being supercute, i've got a load for dude.

I've got a friend who has two cats, sisters called Ripley and Vasquez

Molly came to us at about 10 months, with a long history of abuse, starvation and neglect, and she already knew her name so well that I didn't have the heart to change it. She's Mol the majority of the time (and we have a game where I whisper her name from anywhere in the house and she has to hear me and come to me- so far she's heard it when I've been in the attic and she's in the living room 2 floors away. She also gets called MollyMoo and she's also Babba quite a lot of the time, but then again she comes to me when I even look in her direction a lot of the time, so a lot of the time names aren't necessary at all.

my dog (domino irish staffy) was called mittu when i got him at 15mnth old from a polish guy. so i changed it to mitchell and it suits him better for his looks and size.

 

[Rocky Rescue]

Rocky came to us from a rescue centre called Woodgreen Animal Charity in Cambridgeshire.

My hubby nad I were on a shopping trip to Morrisons which happens to be within close proximity to the rescue centre.

"Lets just go and have a look around then" I said after doing the shopping one afternoon. After looking around for a minutes we came across a

little black dog with one white paw who was just looking up at us from behind th wire fencing. That was it, love at first sight.

We put a reserve on him straight away and went back a few days later to collect him. His name was already Rocky and he has been through enough

change already so we kept his original name.

Exactly the same for my Oreo, except I changed her name as it was Lisa! lol

Not a bad name but I didn't fancy shouting my ex's name across a park!
