whippets.jpgHi All

I am completely new to whippets but have admired them from afar when showing our GSD. We now have the opportunity to have a whippet as a lady not far from us has a lovely litter of puppies. We went to view last night ( the pups are 3 weeks old) and will go back in a couple of weeks (if not before) to 'choose'. The question is how do I choose - I have looked at the breed standard over and over and really am struggling to know what to look out for also boy or girl - does it matter?.

Thanks for you help

Liz

I have attached puppy picture for you all to coo at!!!

its really hard. I picked keano cause he had something that caught my eye. Myself and my dad bred the litter and we narrowed the litter down to three ,2 dogs and 1 bitch. What i tend to look for in a whippet is personality, a nice head, good lenght, eye catching colouring, dark eye, and good movement. However it is really hard to judge when the pups are only 3 weeks old. Eventually me and my dad narrowed the litter down to the two boys. He kept Jake and I kept Keano the bitch went also to a show home and is doing really well. I beleive Its important to remember that your dog should always be pet first show dog second. If the person lives close to you then am sure she wont mind you popping over to check the progress of the pups. Good luck :luck: :luck:

P.S do you know the name of the mother and father

The breeder will have an experienced eye, I'm sure, if they show their dogs. Ask them to pick one or two out that have caught their eye, and make a choice from there maybe? Have you told them you wish to show? It will be in their interest to pick some out that look like they may have show potential, although nothing is guaranteed.

Good luck :luck: . They look a very evenly marked litter don't they? I can see why it would be difficult to choose.

I do think it takes a little while and more experience to be able to pick out pups that conform best to the breed standard. I know you don't want to look a complete novice when you're choosing, but your knowledge will improve with time spent with your first whippet, so I think you do need some help from the breeder on this occasion.

Thanks all for your comments keep them coming.

Just some info for you, the lady that's had the litter isn't a breeder and her girl (the mom) is a pet first and foremost, she doesn't show her whippets at all - as would any animal we have it is always a pet first and whatever else later on, but I am keen to show so would like to have a whippet that I can show if you see what I mean.

The pedigree of the pups are as follows:

Dam: Delightful Girl (dam: Silkstone Tiarella at Jansams Sire: Black Burglar)

Sire: Oakbark Man of Gold of Wolfcastle ( Dam: Ch Oakbark My Spice Girl Sire: Ch Oakbark Millennium Gold)

I think you'll all agree that they are of good breeding.

And heres another pic for you to admire - they are all so georgous to me, hence my problem!

Thanks

liz
