ok how old is /was your oldest whippet been past or present? also how old was it when it retired?

my oldest whippet who ive still got is brandy aka hot spice she will be 13 in feb and she retired aged 4 due to a dropped muscle. :(

good topic carole,

my eldest whippet was a pet called candy, she came from racing stock, walkerville ( catterick), but never new her breeding, i did race her for a couple of years when i lived in richmond, but then moved back to redcar and gave racing up to have family ( silly me ) she died at the age of 13 1/2 due to a roaming dog trying to pinch her choccy buttons and savaged her, it broke my heart having to have her put to sleep,

Kit was 14 1/2 but we had to have her pts earlier this year - bless her. She still trialed pups when she was 9 and remained uninjured throughout her career.

Lost Chucky (molly) at christmas 14 years old bless her she can raid all the fridges up there now :huggles:

Four OLD ONES---Crystal-Bay------13+ Got her off John Connor in 1997 as a pet still runs with young pups for training purposes

Fluke----9 years old---still runs at club to train pups when needed and has the occassional run in veterans

Coral---eight years old in two months still more than capable of holding his own with young dogs for just one trip--often runs in vets

But what i can never understand is why if Dogs are not able/fast enough/ to run with Bitches when they are in their Prime--

They should have to when in veterans makes a Bloody Non-sense of racing---

no good saying that its because there are not enough running -----------------------

with all the SOLO races there are in Classes---

maybe this should be on the proposal for changing to Dogs/Bitches --Seperate in Vets----

maybe more would consider running older dogs then---also age allowance at opens would encourage more enteries it would make keeping older dogs better for racers ---

as they all love to race no matter how old they are---

Sorry gone slightly off topic but still relavent i think---

steve---

PS nearly forgot Kipper ---still thinks he's a PUP

My first ever whippet was a bitch called Judy I got from a chap who was beating the crap out of her So Ruths uncle had the bitch for money owed to him

we never really knew how old she was when we had her we assumed she was about a year old she could have been older we didnt know

but judy had to be put to sleep at 18years old and only because the others was always fighting with her the vet said that in the wild she would have been kicked out of the pack and be left to die

it broke my heart to have her put to sleep but it was for the best

she was Vivs Pet she was to race as Syko's Lass but at her first race Ruths Dad was asked for her racing name and he said I only know its our viv's Pet

she won the Erewash cup that day in 1965 so the name stuck

and still the namee lines on

My husband and i had a non ped whippet which was a working dog called Carrie and she never raced but she was 18 yrs old when we had to pts it was the hardest day of our lives and because of this we never had a dog for 10yrs but we have now got peddies racing and enjoy them to the fullest dont know how we survived without a whippet for so long.

dragoon and redwing ,litter brothers, were both 10 when they retired. they won a few club races in their last year . redwing lived till he was 14 and dragoon is still going strong at 18

Oldest whippet I've had was Pippa, just turned 14 when she was PTS, she retired at 2yrs due to a fractured iliac crest. Not bad since we had an expert vetinary opinion that said she'd be lucky to make 5yrs old due to a supposed heart defect. PTS because she was blind and deaf and wasn't having any quality of life.

Still have some oldies with us. Soapy Joe is 13 1/2 and slowing down a bit but still gets out with the others every day. He retired at 5 due to dropped gracalis. Timmy is 12 1/2 and like his mum Pippa is going blind and deaf but otherwise is fit. He remained uninjured through out his racing career as a club dog. Holly is 11 1/2 and fit as a fiddle .,just had pups :) She broke her leg just before her third birthday. She returned to racing at 4 1/2 and retired at 5/1/2 with a small tricep tear but retired mainly due to maternal duties.. True Faith is 10 and still a mad as when he was a pup. He picked up a lot of muscle injuries during his racing and stopped running at about 6yrs old.

I've usually got younger dogs to race so the old uns get retired to give preference to the younger dogs.
