Walking Dexter, I was approached by a man with a very pretty whippet bitch, he asked me about little fellas pedigree, just for once I told him (generally tell strangers hes a whippet based mut), and he was keen to use him as a stud dog.

Help - what do I say, he offered a puppy - that will do for me, but how old should Dexter be to cover his bitch. Does't that sound clinical! :(

Any advice gratefully recieved - there may be others out there with bitches wondering the same thing.

i would also be intrested in this topic. i have a black whippet and are always being approached to sire females.

my dog is 3, and i dont really know how it works. some people say that if you are the owner of a dog, sometimes the female owner says she never fell pregnant, when in fact she did!.

i would want my dog to have quite an active input into the whole thing not just to do his bit, but when i tell them this, it puts them off! and i never hear from them again....a bit suss i think. but the way i see it why shouldnt he play a big part in it

hes only the father after all???

our blue dog was just over a year old when we used him for the first time.he was ready and quite matured for his age.i would not used a dog before 12 months old.each dog matures quicker then others, some at 12 months others between 2-3 yrs.peter is 2 and a half and is now taking intrest in a bitch. hope thats helps

Dogs can and do sire pups at any age . at 9 months dogs have been used , but surely thats not JUST what it about , ! Unless the dog will be used more than once why give him a taste of something he wont be getting regualry ? It COULD change his personality , make him aggressive with other males , make him dominant and start `cocking `his leg every where (w00t) .

You dont know the owner of the bitch ,does she have a pedigree ? They might be closely related for all you know , how do you know they will rear the pups properly , and get loving homes for the resulting puppies .

Dont just let any Tom , Dick or Harry use your dog theres` too many strays out there as it is . As regards having a pup back nice , but why not charge a stud fee .

All very negative I know , and its very flattering for someone to ask to use your dog , but do think about it seriously before you say yes .Pet Rescue homes are full of unwanted dogs from someone wanting to use a dog to his bitch

well said jax.when i sold pups to people a lot of the time theyd ring me as their male got older saying so an so wants to use him at stud.then id reel off all the reasons why your little boy will change after hes tasted forbidden delights!(mind you this was dobermanns and they do get very aggressive with other males after stud work)theyll also jump fences to get to a bitch in heat, pee and spray everywhere, and turn a deaf ear to your commands if they are sniffing a very interesting smell.can the owner of the bitch take any of the pups back at any time in their lives if they fall on hard times for any reason?could you help if they couldnt?as jax said theres lots of animals out there needing good homes, just cos someone wants to breed their bitch doesnt mean you should help them, find out a bit more about them and their reasons for what they are doing.youve taken the first step to being a responsible owner by asking about it here

The other week while in town this women was asking me Jakey admiring him and saying what a lovely wee dog he was and would I be interested in letting him mate with her bitch. I told her that while I was very flattered the answer was definetly NO for a start he was too young (my baby) and also I would feel responsible for any pups born. I would probably want to keep them all

The answer would be NO to anyone approaching me out on a walk.
