We run a guest house and our dogs are caged in our living room which is under a guest bedroom. There is no other option for this.

Our senior dog Harvey is cage trained and has no issues.

Blu is now 22 weeks, he with Harvey is crated at 10pm ish usually a bit earlier, and on awakening at 2 or 3 am after going out will not settle and howls. We take them through to our bedroom where he settles immediately and all is well. But... it is not very comfortable for us and we need our sleep as we work 15 hour days.

There is no room in our bedroom for a crate.

Suggestions please..

I believe he learned that if he howls, you'll come and take him to your bedroom. So his little "trick" works. He loves being close to you and that's why he's doing this. It's a form a separation anxiety. Have you tried separating the two of them?

Oh yes we are wise to the trick but we are a bit stuck on the room front, as in we have none to manouvere. We have tried putting a quilt over the cage to make it more a cave but no luck.

He has learned that howling works. It would seem that you have no option but to wait until you have no guests and ignore him. Put ear plugs in and just wait him out. Only ever let him out of his crate if he is quiet.

When you take him out at night be very boring! If he gets taken to the garden by Mr or Mrs Grumpy he is much less likely to how after you. Try to ensure he is empty and tired before he is crated. you never know he may soon be able to sleep through!
