This was Scruffs foot, the dayi stepped on it,and broke all 4 metacarpels img021.jpgThis was it a week later, when the whole thing busted as i didnt realise what was going on,inside the cast.img022.jpgAfter i got it cleaned up,and give him some antibiotic's n stuff,as well as a few painkillers.img023.jpgAnd from then to now ,he has never looked back. This is the first D.I.Y,job of this nature that i have attempted,as the vet bill would have been way over what i could have afforded, and they would have wanted to put him to sleep anyway. So ive now left it with the boss,to heal, and so far so good, although the foot is flat. But after what ive seen some feet on here doing,im not realy worried at the moment. ...Billy...

I hope it works Billy, wishing you lots of luck

You are very lucky that this worked out, I know someone who had a rookie vet that put a cast over an open wound and it turned septic with disastrous results. While you have been successful this time I would urge anyone who cannot afford vet bills to take out pet insurance, I pay £8.59 a month for my whippet and knowing the scrapes these dogs often get themselves into it is well worth the money!

Thats quite alright mate,if you have one or two dogs.Fact is ,ive 11,at the minute, which would cost a fortune to insure if i done them all.And anyway,i had a couple of my wxg insured a few years ago. This was done religiously for years, till i found out that the insurance didnt cover dog's, or bitches on my part,if they were used for racing. So it was a waste of money. And i would ask all the k9rs to check that the insurance covers for racing injuries.

Ok I will accept this point as I didnt realise this was a working dog, however as the dogs foot was broken due to a non racing incident you would have been covered if you could have claimed. Also, with 11 working dogs, I'm sure you have an emergency contigency plan for situations that are more serious than this? Or are all injuries DIY?

The dogs are actualy working and racing, and i keep a few greyhounds too.The vet i use would probibly have told me to put the pup down,as he is one of,if not thee top greyhound specialist in Ireland. But as this pup was the only one in the litter, and was born from a mating that wasnt planned, and with it being the bitches first pup,her being 8 years old.I wanted to do what i could for him,as he will eventualy,(hopefully)sire a few himself. He is 1/2 brother to my 3/4WhippetxGreyhound pups.Them having the same dad.So this will give me another line back into my old line.OH im noy going into this, too complicated.Anyway,i just hope he can run in a straight line, thats all i want. The reason i had a go at this,is because theres not much you can do with this injury,so i did a carbon copy of what a vet did with a dog 9 years ago,who had the exact same injury. He went on to be one of the fastest champion racing dogs i ever had,but couldnt turn a corner . ...Billy...

Apparently,if you insure them as a xbreed, and dont specify what the Xs are,you can get away with it.But try to insure a lurcher, greyhound,or longdog,ie,WhippetxGreyhound, cause thats his propper title. Then here in N.Ireland youve no chance. There is a scottish one, for working dogs.ie,gun dogs.Does anyone know of this.and do they insure lurcher types.Stormy would be the man to talk to,i suppose. Will do this soon as he gets home,as no doubt i will be hearing from him. ...Billy...
