I'll post this link here too as i know some of you don't venture out of the non ped section so might not have seen this thread.

The running of K9

Any ideas for Judy & Nigel?

i think k9 is fine as it is , there is nothing wrong with a livey debate as for posting under a pen name everyone knows who the weathergirls are Ihave no objection to paying a fee .....[but I bet i know who does] ..........

By the way some of us do venture off the non-peds that,s how I found out about M&S pet insurance, Ive insured my pup (Tillie) £8.36 per month covers up to £7,000 vet fees each year no excess.. best one ive come across so far.

your identity should be made clear when posting on k9 to stop all this stirring up trouble.

p.s. i venture into the other groups in k9

We use other sections/forums apart fron the non-peds too-

Wouldn't be keen to pay a fee to use k9 but do think users should use their own names-(theres been an awful lot of unpleasantness on this site for quite some time now-)

If we insisted on 'real nmes' being used in posts how could that name be veryfied? The only way that I can think of is if we made a small charge for using K9 and insisted on payment by credit card - not ideal I know. If we insisted on real names being used without any verification method then I could immediately see a whole load of registrations from people not who they are saying they are...

It has never been the intention of the K9 web site to make money. However, somebody has to pay for the hosting charges and in the next few months we will have to find $200 to pay for the software the forums use.

Nigel - someone a bit further back in this thread suggested voluntary payments (I think it was emw). Maybe you could trial this for a while, with a suggested donation of £3 or something. That should raise your $200 easily, I know I'd be happy with that because it's a small price to pay to keep K9 going. And you have so much support here that I'm sure many others would feel the same way.

Another way to raise funds would be to sell nice high-quality shiny-metal/enamel K9 badges that we could wear to ID each other when we meet up at fairs and other get-togethers. Or K9 t-shirts. Personally I'd like a K9 mug to drink my coffee from while I sit here at my computer!! My OH is a member of a car forum and they have quite a lot of logo'd stuff for sale (car badges, t-shirts, fleece beanie-hats) and that forum is very similar to K9 but with sports cars instead of canines(yawn).

Here's their enamel car-bumper badge(designed by someone very close to home here...)

A K9 version might be fun!

I also agree with whoever it was that suggested membership lapsing after a period of time. It's very frustrating for me not to be called Helen but Helena because someone else had already taken the name Helen (and they NEVER post!!! ). If memberships lapsed maybe I could have my own name back, lol!

Helen ;)

 Actually that was in the duplicate thread over on General Discussion-Whippets. Sorry, got confused and forgot where I was

Thanks for your input Helen (and everyone else who has posted on this topic). It's nice to get all the feedback  . We'll think about all the points raised and suggestions put forward.

I've thought before about a 'donation button' but never really thought that it was the right way forward. I have thought about making additional functions available to paying members but it's a question a getting the balance right between administration effort on my part and providing something useful for visitors. Although money is a factor it isn't the reason for the original thread - the reason for the original thread was to get ideas about solving a couple of problems.

Simply put those problems seem to start from those who have little or nothing of any value to add to any discussions (or haven't even seen K9) but seem intent on trying to give K9 a bad name. There have been a few items printed in the dog/whippet publications, discussions at meetings, hushed words at dog events, people trying to stop others from posting on K9. Whether these people will admit it or not I'm sure at the heart of this attitude is the dislike that K9 empowers others. That isn't unique to K9 it's true of the Internet as a whole and I'm sure that many of the traditional organisational structures in the world today will change as everyone finds they have a voice.

Perhaps at the end of the day there is no solution and we shouldn't worry - we'll just let those that want to bury their heads in the sand carry on. Eventually they will become extinct.

K9 is great but i would gladly pay a donation if needed :D :D
