Ellie Lawrenson

The scene police encountered when they were called to the house where five-year-old girl Ellie Lawrenson was mauled to death by a pit bull terrier was described in court today.

The floor was “awash with blood” and the dog was still “frenzied, barking and baring its teeth” from the garden, where it had been banished after the deadly attack.

The evidence was heard by a jury at Liverpool Crown Court during the manslaughter trial of Ellie’s grandmother Jacqueline Simpson.

The court also heard evidence today that Simpson, 45, was nearly twice the legal drink-drive limit and under the influence of drugs when her granddaughter was killed on New Year’s Day when Simpson allowed the dog Reuben into the house in St Helens, Merseyside.

Simpson, who smoked up to 10 cannabis joints a day, had taken a cocktail of wine, marijuana, sleeping tablets and medication for depression, the court was told.

Toxicology specialist Brian Johnson, a chartered chemist and forensic scientist, said the alcohol and various stimulants - taken together - would enhance feelings of euphoria, relaxation and intoxication.

Speaking about the defendant’s sleeping tablets, Temazepam, he said: “It is my opinion the intoxication experienced from the alcohol combined with that from the cannabis would be further exacerbated by the presence of Temazepam.

“The degree of intoxication I can’t comment on because of the tolerance of the individual, and that is unknown in this particular case.”

In a statement, Police Sergeant Paul Hudson, one of the first at the scene, said: “The living room floor was laminated and awash with blood.

“It was as though it had been washed with blood.

“Jacqueline Simpson wasn’t making much sense and I could smell alcohol on her breath.

“It is difficult to say whether she can be described as drunk, given her injuries and distress, but she had clearly had a drink.

“I heard the dog in the garden and was concerned for our safety if it got in.

“The dog’s chest was red with blood.

“It appeared frenzied, barking and baring its teeth at me. I was worried that it could run at the window and easily break the glass.”

The officer said he was so concerned that he radioed for urgent armed assistance.

Trainee paramedic Kai Farmer covered little Ellie’s body with a blanket soon after arriving at the house. He said he knew there was nothing he could do for her.

Describing what he saw as he opened the front door, he said: “Jacqui was lying down in almost a foetal position on the kitchen floor against the cupboard doors.

“She was absolutely covered in blood and told me her name was Jacqui.

“She had some obvious injuries to her right arm. The most obvious was a deep laceration which started on either side of her elbow.”

Simpson was scared to leave the house and enter the ambulance because it meant walking past her granddaughter’s covered body, he said.

Mr Farmer said the defendant repeatedly asked: “Why would a dog do something like that?”

Recalling her explanation to him in the ambulance, he said: “The dog wandered over, wagging his tail, and all of a sudden went for Ellie and there was nothing she could do to stop him.”

Pc Wilfred McGinnis, who killed Reuben with a Remington shotgun, told the court he fired one bullet into the dog’s head from a distance of just 12 inches after taking cover behind the gate.

Simpson denies manslaughter by gross negligence. She is due to begin her evidence soon.
