hello I have an 8 month old son and I was wondering if they would be ok together? I know to watch them at ALL times so they dont get hurt. but would it work? thank you

Definitely.

My grandchildren (4 and 6 months) have been brought up with our Italians and we have had no problems.

It's like everything else if both children and dogs are taught to respect each other from the beginning you will have many happy years watching them grow up together.

My Iggies view the grandchildren as play leaders. Adam, the four year old loves to play with Charlie with his ball on a rope and they are running round and round the armchairs like mad things. Then when they are both tired out, they generally fall asleep together. When Adam comes to stay overnight he no longer is satisfied with a teddy bear but ensures that somehow Charlie finds his way upstairs and into his bed. Adam calls him his Iggie Bottle because he keeps him so warm.

Mind you his teachers at playschool thought he was crackers until we explained what an Iggie Bottle is.

Go for it. If you need any help just let me know.

IGs are lovely with children. One of the biggest fans of IGs are teenage boys!! even the Kevin type.

As Jan said the children must respect dogs first and foremost. I love seeing the bond an IG can have with a child, it is very special, and the best thing is your child will never have a dirty face when you have an IG o:)

One of my puppies went to live with a friend of mine, with a 2 year old boy, and 4 and 6 year old girls. She was a present for the 6 year old Katie, who desperately wanted a dog of her own (they also have 8 agility border collies!), to train in agility.

The bond between Flora and Katie is lovely, and they are inseparable. When the children's friends come to play, Flora is passed around, fussed and cuddled by each one in turn, and because they are used to dogs, they are very gentle with her. I'm going to watch Flora compete in her first mini agility competition in April!

The only thing that would worry me slightly would be a small puppy around a toddler, but once the IG has grown up it can easily get out of the way of a falling child!

Best wishes, Liz

Hello

I have 2 IGs and a 2yr old, I don't have to worry about the dogs as they pretty much keep themselves out of his way when he is crashing about.

Though I do sometimes have to watch my son as I have on several occasions had to remove a tail or leg from his hand and on rare occasions his mouth!.

He loves them both dearly but perhaps a little too much. He doesnt realise his own strengh yet and is only just really learning what gently means.

It is funny watching them play together and when Matthew tries to copy them ie drink from their bowl and sleep in their bed!.

All the best .

I have heard that they get broken legs easily, and since I am horible in those kind of situations (I panick, really bad :b ) but we do have a vets right down the rode, but they are only open on tuesdays and wednsdays. help any one? I dont know if I should get a whippet or an italian greyhound. I love site hounds, they are so beutifull, and gracefull looking(thats not the only resones, dont worry) but I love them

Im afraid that an ordinary Vet wouldnt do to fix a broken leg you would have to find a specialist. The current cost is about £1200 and unless the break is fixed properly which few are, the dogs leg will remain crooked.

The whippet is a far healthier breed all in all. I would suggest before buying either type of dog you find a vets that is open daily.

The other thing also is that there are very few IGs born in the UK each year so you may have to wait quite some time and I believe that most breeders now are charging around £600 for a pet quality bitch puppy :- " Jan

hey jan. I live in the usa. I think I am leaning towards the wippys more, not shure why. but I love all the sight hounds and just about every dog I see lol. I think all dogs are cute (even the hairless ones)lol. thank you for your information, I didnt know that reguler vets didnt fix broken legs. you learn something new every day :)

Do you look at the igpost.com? It is a really good USA website for IGs. I visit from time to time, they seem like really nice people who get on there and offer really sound advice. What part of the US are you from?

There was an IG who came over to compete at Crufts from the USA. She was really beautiful. A real little princess. Jan
