 Yesterday (at a dog show of all places) I discovered that there is a Lure Coursing Club in Brisbane. So I'm there the week end after next.

Don't know anything about doing it but as always I'll just jump in feet first and see if I can suss it out.

What age is the normal age to start this hobby? Kandi is nearly 8 months.

Hi. Abit young in my opinion. I would be inclined to leave it until 12 months unless of course you would be doing it over shorter distances, under 100 metres maybe which may not be ideal as a spectacle. Best of luck anyway.

Lure coursing is great fun and even at 8 months, she may be able to have a 1/2 run :D ......You'll enjoy watching the dogs and Kandi will LOVE watching it  ......Hope you have a good day and keep us informed ;)

I wouldn't do it at all until Kandi is over a year old. No point risking her while she is still developing physically in my view. I know some UK show folks who wouldn't run one of there's under 18 months old. But others will do it at about a year.

It is good fun though. We love to see the other breeds running as well as the whippets. Not always easy to work out the scoring as often you can't see the whole course.

Looking forward to hearing about it.

The BSFA (British Sighthound Field Association) will not allow dogs to run competitively until they are 12 months old. I did run Bertha round in the fun run at the end at the meeting a couple of weeks ago but she was 10.5 months old and is in full exercise at home.

It is great fun and the dogs love it. I have only ever been to a couple of race meetings and found them incredibly boring (sorry, racing folks!) but even when not running I find it very entertaining just watching the lure coursing with all the different breeds and the antics they get up to. Some are not particularly good at it but have a whale of a time whilst they are on the field!!! And then there are those hounds who get mad when they lose sight of the lure so take it out on the equipment and retrieve the pulleys back to hand perfectly!!!

Have fun!

I think that the fun part does come from the dogs antic's doesn't it Dessie.

It's the unpredictability of my dogs that makes it different every time for me. There is just no point in my view going lure coursing with any thoughts other than wondering what my dogs are going to get up to that day. Only thing for certain is that the big hairy thing isn't going to run. Expecially with other deerhounds as they are far too scarey. (w00t) (w00t) Sorry got that wrong he does run - away from them.

Some dogs just don't pay for feeding.

Thanks guys, I was thinking 12 months minimum, but I will take Kandi for a look see anyway. From what I've heard it does sound like a lot of fun.

Sure is!! LOL

I think they had 10 Deerhounds running together last time, what a spectacle!!!

It is good for the pups to go along and just see what happens a few times before they are expected to run. They really get into the swing of it. Bertha had been dying to have a go and her dreams were fulfilled last time!

I think it is also nice that although it is a competition, it really doesn't matter what points the dogs score because they just enjoy themselves so much and the competition bit is really the last thing on your mind.
