I'm really worried about Sam's paw again. :( You may, or may not remember I posted about Sam's paw a while ago - he had a severe infection in his pad (forepaw), which resulted in amputation of the claw & a small bone in the toe. Also, as the infection was SO severe, part of the tendon had to be removed aswell.

Well, basically I returned to my vet yesterday with Sam because his limp had come back with a vengeance. I thought maybe that his claws needed clipping (he won't let ME do that!!). Well, they did, but that wasn't the cause. Otherwise I suspected it could be scar tissue on the pad that was irritating him. Close, yes. He's got a corn. Simple as that. However, the downer on all this is the vet's advice. I have to say that I trust the vet totally - he saved Sam's toe by removing the small bone & claw. The trouble is, if this corn doesn't go (got softening ointment to apply twice daily), & Sam is as bad in two weeks time; he suggests seriously thinking about amputating the whole toe this time. Can corns not be removed? Does anybody know?

Sam will be nine years old in October, & has a heart murmer of 5/6 on one side, so the vet suggests making a decision sooner rather than later bearing in mind the stress on his heart with general anaesthetic. That's fine; & I totally understand that. That's the last thing I want to do!!

Can anyone help with advice on corns?

Should I consider a second opinion? I don't want to, but I will if people think that's the best option?

There is a greyhound Vet in Oxford who specialises in Corns. They are doing research into corns now as they suspect that it could be viral. If you want the Telephone number to give to your vet for referral let me know. Corns can be treated without amputation but it can be a long haul

Its been know for years that corns can be viral, caused by the papilloma wart virus. On the pad they look different because they are compressed by the weight of the dog walking on it. They can also be formed by fibrous tissue that forms after a cut or puncture. A "corn" seems to be a bit of a generic term. Greyhound vets know all about them!
