Hi I have a 13.5 year old male beagle that is constantly wetting in the house. He has had tests at the vets and there is nothing showing up so the vets thinks its just old age. I've tried Propaplin but it has made no difference. Is there anything that anyone has tried that has worked?

As males are prone to scent marking it might be worth trying to eliminate any lingering scent detectable only to him.

Use a 10% solution of biological detergent. Wash the area thoroughly. Rinse. Dry. Agitate some sort of spirit like surgical spirit into the area to lift the last fat deposits present in urine.

Is he anxious for any reason? The act of urination is a relief. Dogs sometimes use urination to relieve any tension they are feeling. Dogs get anxious for all sorts of reasons. Noises that worry them, Changes in the household. Deafness. Failing eyesight. If he is suffering from anxiety for any reason it could be the cause of his problem.

If the vet has given him a clean bill of health then the next avenue would be to consult a behaviourist. They would come to the house and do a full assessment of him. Choose one in your area from either COAPE or the APBC.

Is your dog actually 'incontinent' as your topic says? Is he aware of when the urine is leaving his body? Is he lying in it without noticing? Or is he peeing up the curtains and doorways etc?

My sister has an 11 year old male whippet who is as good as gold in the house - unless someone he either doesn't know or doesn't like comes in to the house - then he'll mark around the house to make his point.

If you feel that your dog is showing signs of senility then I would recommend "Aktivait". I used it with success on my bitch who took to peeing in the bed (our bed ). The Aktivait seemed to help her in that she knew to get out of the bed if she needed to pee.

I also give it to my 14 and a half year old whippet who has even learned new stuff- like how to get in to where I keep his favourite treats :)
