Iam getting a lure built for training pup,I have raced whippets before BUT quite a while back.

So my memory is a little bit hazey on the TIMES {AGE!!} that you start introducing pup to the lure, and also the time or age for introducing to the traps.

I do have a rough idea, but i would like to hear and advice from the Whippeteers that are training and racing dogs now. As i am only aloud the one pup {WORKING on the 2nd &3rd} :- " and i dont want to spoil him.

Hope to hear any comments or advice soon.

p.s. my pup is around 4months at momment 8)

not sean any pics of him for ages get some done and what does he weigh now stop keping him in hiding

keeping him under wraps for the momment as for weight, i will keep u guessing,althou he is quite leggy and slim but he has built up quite a good muscule tone for his age{looking good}

hope u r having fun with the litter sister, just aswell she will be run in diffirent sex class, she be no match for zac :p :D :p :D :p :- " :- "

OHH that wasnt very nice :( , hears me thinking your indy would only need a 30yard start too only get within a yard too losing to zac in a dog & bitch supreme overall puppy final :D :D :D :- " :- " :- " :p :p :p

personally i think it depends on the size of your pup. the bigger one tend to take longer. this is just my opinion ( i have a pup 6 months old now) if i was u i wud be playing with the lure with him already just shake it @ him and let him kill it etc. im giving mine plenty of free running and have been doing this since she was 3 months old. im waiting another month b4 we start to hand slip her and gradually go further and further each week. il also be starting to walk her thru the traps in the next few weeks so she can get used to them. im looking on actually racing her in a handicap ( 4 experience) @ about 10 months giviong me 3 months to get her running 150yds then in the traps then with another dog etc. hope this helps. is your pup the beautiful zak out of slipper? if so i loved him  and yes i think we need some new pics of him :D

depends on the build,i prefer later rather than sooner to make surethe dog is finished growing and the skeliton is set up. my dog was 10 month before he went behind a lure,i was told this by one of the best dog ostopath mr duncan, his opion is that whippet poeple start to early and spoil dogs , he just shakes his head.a dog can free run great but put it behind a lure the stress must be up 50% then the pick up stressing even more my dog is 30lb.seems the OLD rule of 6 month to start hand slips. my rule is depends on the dog i think 8 month for littuns up to 12 month for bigguns. so easy to spoil a good dog by starting to early and why take it easy and you will end up with a sound dog :luck:

Yes-it does depend on the dog-size etc...

We too give them plenty of free running on the beach mainly-you soon see when they are sound on their feet.

We have always started our dogs much younger than the ages stated-5-6month old and never spoilt them or had problems...

Just to add-

Waterford went round the bends at Thornton Greyhound Stadium-Scotland at only 8 month old-

She's never come to any harm by it-her only problem/downfall is coming into season every 6 months-

Largely depends on the dog.....

Don't know Stevie Duncan-

kez had her 1st hand slip last sat @ 6 months old only 15 yds but no problem wotsever like i say she has had plenty free running. stevie duncan is a greyhound man up here karen hes also a dog osteopath mainly in greyhounds but does or used to do whippets too.

old habits, die hard. must be the sea air karen or lucky ;)

Hiya Sherry- We have always used Paul -(physio from Leyland) when needed recommended to us by Steve/Julie Bateson-

He too does greyhounds/whippets and horses-

Good Luck with Kez/training :luck:

hope whitneys ok he is a harden ,all ways there, does not seem to pick up many injurys :luck:
