This may be useful to anyone whose dog has bowel problems.

I thought I would update you on Daisy's diagnosis and progress.

The tests and bowel biopsy came back with LPE (Lymphocytic plasmacytic enteritis) a form of IBD similar to Crohn's in humans.

Prior to the biopsy and spaying operation (10 days ago), blood samples showed that she had low vit B12 and high foliates.

She finished a course of AB (post bowel biopsy precaution and to kill off excess gut flora) and then I started adding live goats yogurt to her diet.

Her food has been soaked for the last 10 days since the spaying and the biopsy (easier to digest).

She is now allowed back gradually onto solid kibble.

When she first arrived 8 weeks ago we had to deal with bloody diarrhea and wormy stools every hour or so.

She was put onto Burns Pork and potato. After about 10 days the blood and diarrhea had settled down a bit and she was needing to go less frequently. After about 3 weeks she became constapated in the morning and loose later in the day.

I have stuck with the diet and tried to find a balance with Lactulose for the constapation.

It is now 8 weeks on and (touch wood) her bowels are working perfectly.

I think I have her diet sorted. I am making goat’s milk yogurt to supplement the probiotics and prebiotics (you can also buy this in Asda).

Daisy has her food split into 3 meals a day:

Burns pork and potato with 1 tbls yogurt and 1ml of Lactulose added to each meal and plenty of water mixed in.

I can really recommend trying the Burns Pork and Potato (about £40 for 15kg) as an alternative to expensive prescription diets for dogs with bowel and digestive problems and sensitive stomachs.

It is gluten free and recommended by a lot of vets for dogs with Pancreatic disorders such as EPI

Very useful info Eve.

Glad to hear you have a diagnosis for little Daisy, and that her tummy problems are showing improvement on the diet you are giving her. :)

Hope she recovered well from her spay.

:)) Good to hear that Daisy is doing well, long may it continue

Pleased to hear Daisy is doing so well.

Where do you get your food from? Is it only sold online?

I am spending about £50 a time for a vet prescribed food so would be very interested in giving this a go.

The 15KG bag is about £42 at Petplanet if you have a branch near you.

Chemistdirect are also good to buy from. That is were I usually order mine. You get free delivery on orders over £40.

The Burns is an economical food to use and a 7.5KG bag lasts me 8 weeks feeding the recommended amount for a 12.5kg dog daily.

If you are changing feed, you would need to do it very gradually especailly as your dog has a sensitive stomach. I would recommend replacing no more than 10% of the existing food every day so that the new food is introduced over at least 10 days. The Burns can take several weeks for the body to adapt to but then Daisy was very poorly with a massive 'flare-up' when she came here.
