We are currently looking at getting a puppy to be a member of our family. My husband is really keen on Springer Spaniels but it is a breed I am unfamiliar with. I grew up with GSDs and Labs and a few people have said that Springers are very "giddy" and hyperactive.I work part-time from home so have plenty of time to devote to caring for a puppy and I love exercise. I regularly take 2-3 hour walks and also run several times a week. I really miss the company of dogs having grown up with them ( in fact I walk a friend's dog every afternoon for that very reason!) and I want my two boys (aged 7 and 9) to experience the joy of sharing their life with a dog. So, I am asking any Springer Spaniel owners or former owners to give me some honest advice on the breed. I want a dog that is active and playful and can promise plenty of exercise but I also want one that will eventually calm down at the end of the day and curl up at my feet! Obviously, I know it takes a couple of years for a dog to mature so I am not expecting any overnight miracles but given plenty of exercise, love and the right training, is a Springer a good family pet?

hi there, a springer makes a lovely family pet if you have the time and space to exercise one.....

my dogs best friend is a springer, he is owned by an awful bloke who leaves him at his mothers all the time, where he gets no exercise, and he is still lovely.

He is a clever dog, and so willing to learn and please you, that i find it heartbreaking to know he isn't getting the exercise he needs. I frequently kidnap him, tho he has a lot more energy than my dog, we walk along on the lead and the springer does laps around us... He also brings you things, like newspapers or letters that come through the door, or my tools if i leave them around the garden.

They are giddy creatures, and bounce around a lot, but they are also lovely and friendly and happy, at 7 and 9 your boys are big enough to cope with a bouncy puppy, and it will curl up in the evenings for a snooze. I find their coat is lovely too, so smooth that the dirt just falls off (onto your floor) and they are back to clean again in no time.

I think they make a brilliant addition to the family, they're friendly and cuddly and willing to join in games like frisbee or fetch,

Go for it! (but do please look into getting a rescue one first,)

good luck!
