Been shopping online for dog treats, and was looking at chicken jerky treats in particular. Haven't looked at chicken jerky treats ever since they were implicated in the deaths of numerous dogs a few years ago. They were made in China, and the original maker who supplied Walmart and Amazon, changed their name shortly thereafter.

After looking at quite a few brands, there is no country or origin or manufacture to be found on the package or manufacturer's web site (if they have one). I am PRESUMING that they re made in China, since most things not made in China note it in big letters on the front and rear of the package. I never looked at treats for sale in other parts of the world to be fair.

There are hardly any "rules" in China, on pet treats/food manufacturing, and it is starting to look like we, in the U.S.A. are changing certain labeling rules that have existed for years.

I certainly wouldn't buy any of them that didn't proclaim 'USA raised poultry' along with 'Manufactured in the USA'. I think you're very correct in your assumption that if they don't specify that, you probably don't want to know where they came from and/or what conditions they were made under. Most companies that globally source from other reputable countries outside the USA are pretty upfront, IME, with where the products come from.

Fortunately it's not too hard to find the USA made ones if that's what you're specifically looking for.

No it is not your imagination. Pet food in the US has been in crises for years and it's now getting much much worse.

From what I am seeing; if my dogs are to get chicken jerky treats; I will have to make it myself! Now to dig out the dehydrator from storage.

As far as pet food in the USA; it went to he** when the FDA took over many regulatory duties from the USDA! The FDA loosened the restrictions on what could be put into the pet foods. Their opinion is that since the food is produced under extremely high temperatures; that is is now ok to use what used to be "not fit for human consumption" animal parts.

Unfortunately, it's always been the case, but now it's official. Look up "the four Ds in pet food". That's been around a very long time. If you want more elucidation, watch Pet Fooled. Released in 2016. And many of us will never forget the melamine poisoning scandal in 2007, thousands of pets died, though some sources will not admit it, which was when I first started actually paying attention and learning above and beyond "always feed wet, never feed kibble" (this regarding cats, which I'd known and practiced since 1986), though it took me four more years to venture into raw and homemade, in 2012

PS when I checked my date accuracy, I discovered that in 2008, just after the melamine poisoning in pets (yes, from products from China) there was a similar scandal regarding baby formula products, same source.

If you have a dehydrator & the ambition, by all means make them yourself! I'm sure it would be less expensive than buying ready made ones! And probably rather satisfying, too. (I sort of enjoy occasionally making treats for my dogs. I do meatballs on a regular basis.) However, there are decent sources for chicken jerky treats if you don't want to put in the extra effort. Full Moon is one company I ran across that, if I were looking to buy chicken jerky, I would have no qualms about buying from.

I used to make chicken jerky for the dogs, a few yrs ago...but then I got lazy and packed the dehydrator away.
At least I would know exactly what is in them.
