Hi i have a whippet bitch she is approximately 2-3yrs old i have had her for 9 months. On valentines day i noticed a small amount of blood after she had weed i assumed that she was coming into season but after that there was no blood and no swelling until yesterday when there was some blood spots on the floor and again this morning but she still isnt swollen and she doesnt seem to be cleaning herself more than normal, she is fine in her self and the only odd behavior she has had is that she has started to want to play with toys ( in the 9 months i have had her she wouldnt even look at a toy). Has anyone else had a similar experience (all my other dogs bleed lots and swell) do you think she is in season and if so has she been in season since the 14th or yesterday?

yes - my (then) 5 year old bitch Ivy, did not bleed much - I was prepared and had bought a pair of 'dog knickers' for her, but they were not necessary. I noticed the odd spot of blood in the kitchen near her bed and that was it. She was mostly confined to her bed for all the time that she was bleeding because she seemed to be a bit sick and had diarrhoea - but this may have been something to do with being in season. Also, she showed no obvious signs of it being near, such as swelling, more interest in males, a desire to escape etc. When she had stopped being ill, I still took her for walks, but she was not allowed off the lead and I tried to walk her a long way off other dogs, but we experienced no particular problems with entire dogs - they did not seem interested!!

I generally count the first show of blood as Day 1.

I find all of mine will bleed first before swelling, some bleed more and some swell more than others and they don't seem to clean themselves more than normal until they are a good week along. It sounds as though your girl is definitely in season

The other thing which all mine have done is to have some degree of weight gain afterwards, and, in a couple of cases, even produce milk. You may find your girl has a full blown phantom pregnancy when she will take toys into her bed etc as if they were puppies. That generally comes a while after the season finishes though.
