the wee whippet i brought home from the pound yesterday has developed kennel cough (we think)

its like hes trying to throw up, but nothing comes out after he finishes retching.

there is a bit of a cough.

hes eating and drinking ok, but hes sleeping beside my other dogs who havent been vacc'd against kennel cough

i've been reading different things on the treatment, some say treat with benylin, honey & glycerin etc

some say take to vets and get antibiotics.

any suggestions?

he was treated with advocate treatment yesterday for the mild case of mange, and to worm him etc..

thats the only treatment hes had so far, as well as a 1st vaccination.

hes looking alot better today, redness has gone away, and his coat does look better.

should i take him to the vet or treat with a natural remedy? i dont want to compromise his health as he is underweight etc

Depends how he is.. keep him warm, hydrated and happy... lots of fluids and soft slippery foods (keep him away from all other dogs, it is highly contagious)

If he is eating and reasonbly happy then no need to bother your vet- but if he is very ill and refusing food/ fluids then he needs antibiotics.

Good luck :luck:

Hi

I use advocate on my dogs. I found that sometimes my old dog used to be sick after a dose and I also noticed coughing sometimes. It could just be the Advocate. It is not generally recomended for dogs that are underweight or in poor health.

Obviously Jake's condition required treatment.

The pipettes are in various doses 4-10kg & 10-25kg. This can be a bit of a pain if your whippet weighs 12kg as the larger pippette contains a large amount of the solution and is really an overdose if the whole lot is applied. It may be that your vet used the larger size on Jake and this could be making him sick.

I split the 10-25kg packs on my 12kg whippets using about three quarters of a tube on each

You will know pretty quickly if he has kennel cough as the side effects of the Advocate would settle down after a day or too. The advice given by Pippywhippet is spot on. If Jake has kennel cough, then your other dogs have already been exposed and kennel cough is highly contagious.

Hope that it is just the Advocate and that Jake is better soon

thanks for the info regarding the advocate.

well Jake weighs 10.5 kilos, and the dose the vet gave me was for 10-25kilos

so it may be he has had an overdose of it

he has only had the odd raspy noise this morning and no retching.

and hes eating well, and out in the garden enjoying the sun and in good spirits

i will keep an eye on him, and watch him closely

My gut instinct is that it will be the Advocate

Jake is underweight, has had a lot of stress and has some health issues

The stronger dose makes most of my dogs sick if I use the full tube.

My vet insists that the tube for up to 10KG is not enough for a 12KG whippet and that I should used the dose 10-25kg.

The contents of the next dose up are the same, just a larger quaniity to treat up to 25kg which is why I split the pack.

With 5 whippets to treat I buy in bulk online (with vet prescription)

Mine are due to start their 2 months on 1 month off program that I use next week (lungworm is in our area and my lot are grazers)

I am not looking forward to it. Advocate is really messy to use and I always get at least one dog being sick.

Hope Jake is better soon

thanks Eve

I didnt even think to give him a half dose, or even 3/4 of it

hes still in fine form, and has a very good appetite.

he has a wee raspy hack now and again with some retching

hopefully that will go in the next day or so.

will mention to the vet when hes back for 2nd vacc in 2 weeks. ;)
