Interested in finding out more about this dear boy? Please read on…

Dear Jacko is a 4 year old ex-racing greyhound boy. Jacko was in danger of being put to sleep as he was no longer able to race. This gorgeous lad doesn’t seem to have had the best of times – he has an old break in his wrist that doesn’t appear to have been fixed properly, and his coat was very poor upon arrival.

Jacko is an average sized black hound at about 27” to the shoulder and he now has a very pretty, shiny coat. He gleams in the sun and is a picture of health. Poor Jacko has been with us since October 2012 with no interest at all thus far, and we can only assume its because he’s black. He has a beautiful personality though, and it is a crying shame that he has been waiting so long. He has an undershot bottom jaw, giving him a bit of a ‘badger’s snout’, but we think this just adds to his gorgeousness. Jacko is unique!

~ Personality ~

Generally: Beautifully soft, gentle, grounded, laid back, loves people, confident but not assertive.

Jacko is a really lovely, friendly boy despite his harsh past. He holds no grudges and is so gentle and affectionate with his foster parents. He is a confident boy, loves a bit of fuss and isn’t shy about asking for some lovins. He likes to lean on you for some hugs. He has a calm demeanour and is very laid back & grounded, taking what comes to him. He is generally very well behaved and tries to do what is asked, especially if doing so results in a yummy treat! This boy just needs a chance with someone who can look beyond his black coat to show how fabulous he is.

~ In the Home ~

Generally: Housetrained, very well behaved, ok to be left, good with kids 8+yrs, mannerly, calm.

Jacko is fabulous in the home, no bother at all. He is friendly, affectionate, and rather nosey, seemingly enthralled by the regular household activities. He is very obedient and knows all the basic commands. He is completely housetrained, ok to be left with canine company, and is not destructive. He’s perfect, really! Very relaxed in the home and very easy going. His foster parents love how happy he is to see them in the morning, as he sleeps downstairs, and his ‘happy face’ always makes them giggle. He has also started playing with toys and will chase a ball around in the garden with glee.

Jacko is sharing his foster home with 2 pooches – a lurcher and a jack Russell. He gets on famously with both of them and has never caused any hassle. Jacko is also excellent with kids, being calm and gentle by nature. His foster parents’ grandchildren visit a lot and Jacko loves them to bits. We think that Jacko is so laid back that he could adjust to being an only dog provided he wasn’t left alone for long periods, but would also fit excellently into an existing pack because he is so non-confrontational and is not assertive at all. He can fit anywhere, really!

~ Other Animals ~

Generally: Very good, non-confrontational, unassuming, gentle, savvy, excited by offlead dogs but not aggressive.

In the home, Jacko is excellent with his doggie friends. Bobby, being a jack Russell, is The Boss, and Jacko accepts this just fine. He is gentle, un-assuming and likes to play but will stop if asked. He is an excellent potential companion for a resident pooch. Out on walks, Jacko is also fine and loves saying hi to the other dogs he meets along the way.

When Jacko first arrived to us, he was not at all small dog friendly, and his progress now is testament to how the majority of greyhounds learn that small dogs are actually dogs too and not things to be chased. All they need is time and repeated positive socialisation sessions, which Jacko is getting. Jacko can become over-excited by lots of dogs running loose, but it appears to be based on him wanting to join in and play. His foster parents are working on a ‘walk on’ command so that he moves on and doesn’t get as distracted by things in the distance. He is making great progress.

~ Out and About ~

Generally: Walks to heel, leans against you, getting better with busy traffic, good with dogs, suitable to be let offlead in safe areas after lots of recall work.

Jacko is your typical male greyhound – a giant couch potato! He gets 3 walks a day with his foster parents, but would probably be content with 2 walks a day of 30mins each, and a chance o stretch his legs in a safe, secure area once or twice a week. He has a habit of leaning in to you when walking along on the lead, and doesn’t pull. If he spies something of interest in the distance, he freezes, and again the ‘walk on’ command he is learning is helping with that. Jacko is excellent in the car and is getting used to busy traffic.

~ Medical Issues ~

As already mentioned, Jacko has an old fracture to his wrist which has been gradually healing as is for some time. He has been seen by a vet and has had it x-rayed, with the conclusion that it would be best to just leave it now as it is so far along in its healing process. It doesn’t pose him any issues on his walks, it just makes his leg look a wee bit misshapen.

~ Where Am I? ~

Jacko is currently in a foster home in Norfolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you may be required to travel to meet and collect him.

~ Want To Adopt Me? ~

Jacko is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure.

~~ KERRY GREYHOUNDS UK ~~

Kerry Greyhounds UK is a small voluntary organisation that is based in Norfolk, England. It focuses on rehoming unwanted Irish greyhounds and lurchers, as huge numbers are bred in Ireland each year and homes are few and far between. KGUK operates through a network of volunteers spread over Ireland and the UK. We can look after approximately 30 dogs at any one time in both kennels and foster homes.

Each dog is neutered, vaccinated, & microchipped before being adopted (unless stated otherwise).

We assess the suitability of all home offers, and we have homed greyhounds in all corners of the UK. If interested in one of our hounds, please visit our website’s Adoption Page: http://s300889640.websitehome.co.uk/uk/adoption.html for information and instructions on our homing procedures. Once you have filled in and returned the application form, we will then contact you via phone or email to discuss adopting one of our hounds in more detail.

If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to contact us. I (Tam) can be contacted through the following email:

Email: tam@kerrygreyhounds.co.uk. Emails are usually replied to within 24hrs.
