    I think I get them, but it's odd to figure out because in the UK they're Lurchers, and in the USA (where I am), besides certain dog groups, they're just be called "mutts" since people find crossbreeding such an issue! I am very much a fan of them.

    I think they're regarded as 'not just mutts' (not that there's anything wrong with mutts of course) because they are/were bred for purpose - from Wikipedia:
    
    

    The fact that lurcher translates in Romany as 'thieving cur' pretty much sums them up
