I am rather perplexed at the attitude of some who feel that jemima harrison is a threat to pedigree dog breeding. Surely her programme has merely ruffled a few feathers, got a few breeders a bit hot under the collar and shown the world that that here in England pedigree dog breeders will not be told how to do thier job! When some of our breeders have been line breeding for 40 years or more, do they really need to be educated how to produce ribbon winning stock. I don't think so! I do however think they need to be educated on how to produce healthy stock. Our breeders need to open their eyes and ears and stop thinking they know it all, because they don't. It is not the health issues that are so damaging to our dogs. It is the breeders who refuse to see there may be a problem with line/ in breeding. There are a few very honest breeders out there, trying to educate themselves and others, trying to do the best for their animals. But all the time people are dishonest and blinkered it will be an uphill battle. But think on because the tide is definitely turning. The public who buy the majority of dogs bred by the showing fraternity are beginning to wise up. They are listening to the jemima harrisons of this world and they are not pleased by what they hear. Unless things are changed from within this showing/ breeding world then maybe pressure will be brought to change things by other means. Is it time for the kennel club to inject new blood into it's ranks who have a forward thinking agenda. Are the K.C. really going to try to change , after all we have heard them claim that banning father /daughter matings was a publicity stunt. Do we really want these people as custodians of our breeds. As breeders you should want to do the best possible for your dogs , no one should have to tell you this, YOU should know it and be fighting for your breed. Don't decry others for standing up. At least listen, educate yourself, then join the debate. Contribute! It's not just about the ribbons, it's about the getting there too. p.s The phrase ''well I know all of my line are healthy, I don't know what all the fuss is about'' should be banned, because quite frankley you don't know, and that's just the whole point!
