I wonder if anyone else read the article by Jessica Holm in Dog World. I have added the link if anyone would like to read it. I think it is such a well-balanced article. I was also interested in the comment someone has added, it sounds very sensible. I don't really feel confident to put my thoughts into words on this subject but I found myself very comfortable reading both the article and the response.

My comment on this would be, and i did enjoy the article cheers Jenny, is....

Line breeding is inbreeding

An excellent article - the best I have read on the subject.

However when breeds (of any type of animal) were/are being developed line-breeding is usually essential to establish the phenotype, so I am not absolutely in agreement with the reply.

My comments would be:

1. It was a measured response, let down by the fact that she hadn't actually watched the programme, a very basic error when replying on such a heated subject, in my opinion :- "

2. Has the person who replied ever posted on k9? Or are there people in other breeds who have similar opinions and concerns as some whippet people?

Interesting thread, thanks Jenny

I agree its a fundamental mistake to write an article based around a programme you haven't watched.

But it seems a rational and calm statement unlike the hyped up trash that a lot of the media come out with.

The article is Ok but the response is excellent. Everyone should read it and think about their own breeding programme.

There are people in many breeds who have concerns and questions over KC policy and the health of the pedigree dog......thankfully. Cyber space is thick with breed forums discussing the health of pedigree dogs.

Here is one of them

Thanks for the link Jenny. Thank goodness these longstanding problems are finally out in the open and being talked about- I really do hope that much good will come out of this, and that the KC will wake up and realise its responsibilities to pedigree dogs health welfare in this country, and that breeders will be thinking long and hard about every mating too.

the reply was great

taken from dogworld-

""Further, out-crossing within breeds maximises the number of available alleles (thus balancing out the bad, deleterious, genes that line-breeding may indeed concentrate over time). Increased heterosis (hybrid vigour) is aspired to by stockmen the world over as it increases longevity, fecundity and disease resistance. We don't just need a wake -up call, we need help with education about reducing COI in our pedigree breed population".

Hadnt seen the response to the article when i posted earlier, it is an exellent reply

Everyone should take a peek at the forum given in Cathies link

It illustrates with clarity why "should" instead of "must" just hasnt worked
