Well, our beautiful Josephine is getting used to people, being cuddled, and living in a house. Even the house training is going well, well quite well- thats the problem.

She is clean all night, all day when I'm around, if we go out when its already dark and if I leave her in the car.

HOWEVER if I go out of the house, even for a few mins she pees copiously. It doesn't matter if I leave her in her crate, loose in in the kitchen or free in the house (shan't be doing that again :x ), and even if I leave the door open to the garden she goes in the house.

Also, if I have left her in the car, even for a short while- like filling up with petrol, she pees when I get back in. If I can I let them out when I get back to the car, but this is not always possible, and normally she won't pee while she's out of the car, but is quite happy to do it as soon as I put her back in.

She pees in the garden or on walks quite happily when I'm around.

Also she spent a night in kennels last week and was completely clean until the morning when, after having been for a walk and a long pee, she went back to her room, dragged her bed into the run, peed on it and went back indoors and went to sleep on the concrete.

PLEASE HELP, I'm getting quite desperate.

ps I leave her with: radio on, a kong, a beef pizzle (her favourite), a hide shoe and her favourite soft toy.

I'm no expert but I think it sounds like anxiety when you leave her. Can you build up from a few seconds again like you would with a new pup? Go out without any fuss, come back in, let her out for a wee, BIG praise when she goes. Hopefully you can build up the time away quite quickly. Good luck. :luck:

Or maybe she'll only pee when and where she feels absolutely secure and alone?

Sound's like insecurity/anxiety to me aswell..........Juley's advice is spot on :) ......... :luck: :luck: with her ......

may I ask a 'toilet' question while some knowledgeable people are on this topic, why does our 6 mth puppy, Ella, only do her business at home? we've had her for just over 3 mths and in that time she's only ever pooed 4 times when out walking.

I'm not bothered but just wondering if there may be a reason why

I don't think so because she pees quite happily on walks and in the garden with me around.

As far as the going out for a short time goes, in theory I completely agree, but I literally only have to shut the front door for her to pee

I can sympathise a bit because while Maisie has always been 99% clean in the house, she will sneak into bedrooms and pee on beds if she's stressed by anything. It's usually when there are visitors or if there's an obvious change of routine, eg OH and I getting ready to go out for the evening (instead of vegetating in front of our respective screens!).

I have always assumed that it's a combination of marking and anxiety behaviours (particularly as she's a very prolific marker anyway).

We've kept the problem to a minimum by restricting the areas she has access to and trying to keep things calm wherever possible. Don't know quite hoe to approach your problem here though, apart from the big step back which has already been suggested. It's a headache, particularly when they're doing so well otherwise, but may be successful. :luck:

This is probably because you have done such a good job in house training her ...........Most of these case's are because at home we whizz our pup's in and out of the garden with cries of wee wee's, toilet, quicky wee's etc ......then praise our pup's like mad for going in our garden, .....that when we go for walk's we forget to "prompt" the pup to go, or when they do go we forget or don't get really excited and over the top with praise ......I have the same with 1 of mine .......as a matter of fact we took her away this year on a camping holiday ......it took Ellie 2 days befor she'd even have a wee  ........As your pup's so young it's worth trying to get her to go whilst out and about ......All of my lot have a "quicky wee's" command now just to make sure lol .......

I feel quite a saddo saying this, but I still praise my 9 month old pup for pooing on the Common. It still feels like an achievement as he is such a baby to me..........We have the very occasional accident (wees), and I think it takes much longer with some dogs, particularly if they have a neurotic/anxious side. Just keep on praising the positive, and it will settle in time.I do wish you luck, it is irritating but you are doing the right thing :luck:

It seems to be quite common with bitches that they only empty at home. It can be quite a problem if they are out for the day like at shows.

I've known deerhounds hang on for over 24 hours for a pee and about 48 hours for a poo. Tally can do this and I worry about him keeping all this waste product inside him.

I've had bitches that won't empty if they are on the lead. Dogs scent mark and so are generally different.

Sounds like it's a nervous thing with Josephine. Sorry but I can't remember if she's a rescue. If so she might have been disciplined for accidents before you got her and thus when she see's you she's very happy and also stressed and worried that you'll tell her off for accidents so she let's go as as kind of submissive urination/excitment/flee response. Never know what a useless previous owner has taught a dog to do. :(

Keep your responses to a minimum. ie you coming home isn't a big deal it's just normal. I'd put her out when you get home and then clean up. Don't make an issue out of it and hopefully it should get better. Praise her when she goes outside the usual housetraining stuff as well.

I agree with bee jay on that our minnie was just like that and we new she had had some good hiding from her previous owner. To the exctent if he got hold of her lead she wet gerself infront of us.

She was only 18 month when we got her and it did take a long time to stop the wees we even used to have the mop and bucket ready in the kitchen for when we got home cos there was allways a very large puddle for us I dont know were it all came from.

We used to come in igniore her and the wee totaly and just cleen it up when she wasnt about it did take a long time but she stoped there would be the odd time of no pee and it got more and more regulare till it stoped.

Shes now 5 and if she gets realy stresd there may still get a puddle but its vetu rare may be 3 of 4 times a year. Nothing is ever said no eye contact made and it all over with.

We never greet Minnie when we come in just walk in coats off kettel on asif we havent been out and we do the same wneh we go out just as if we were going to the loo hope this helps its a long slog and we got ride of all the carpets and have tiled floors do its not an issue here if she does pee

Pleased Josephine is settling well apart form her peeing.

Leia was exactly the same when we got her :( Would wee on walks and in the garden, but also in the house if she was left - despite having 3 other dogs for company. She never chewed anything so I suppose we got off lightly as I didn't crate her and wee is easy to clean up.

I must admit that I didnt ignore her when I came home (she jumps head height with joy so she's pretty hard to ignore (w00t) ) but I know that's what I should have done really. Before I leave them they have always had a good run and then settled, so hopefully when I go out they are too busy thinking about sleeping to worry about if I'll come back.

I made sure that I removed the smell (using biological washing powder to clean the area) and always cleaned up when she wasn't there. Obviously I never told her off for doing it. It just stopped after a few months...she has wee'd in the house a few times since, but it's been over night when she hasn't had a wee before bedtime.

Good luck with her :luck:

Edited to say: does she get on OK with Nana & Tess. She's not worrying that they'll bully her when you're not there is she?

Thank you all for your replies.

Rae- its great to know that someone else has had exactly the same thing and that it passes. She gets on well with Tess and Nana- Tess is boss, Josie second and Nana third in the pecking order and if anything she's a cit of a bully, always nagging at the others to play or trying to steal their chews etc.
