Being very new to the world of showing whippets I find it quite interesting that you can show a dog in front of 1 judge and win and then the next week, in front of another judge do nothing at all.

I realise your name must come into it with some people but surely they are all looking for the same breed standards.

I only ask as, being a listed dressage judge, I have to attend compulsory training sessions every year (if we don't attend we get struck off) and complete a certain amount of "sitting in" and writing for a judge of a higher list than myself before we can be examined for a higher list. This is to make certain that everyone is looking for the same priorities as everybody else.

So is there a training scheme similar for dog judges or does it just go on experience?

Debbie

I know nothing about judging but I expect that if you read the same description out to a dozen different people and asked them to draw their impression (supposing they all could draw) you would end up with 12 different pictures. I don't think that it is such an exact science as dressage.

8) I could say heaps.............but am going to steer clear. o:)

That's a shame Cartman. :( ....i'd have enjoyed hearing your veiws :- " ;)

My daughter does dressage , and although in an ideal world all judges would agree on the correct way of going, the reality can be quite different. Generally, the higher the judge is listed, the more knowledgeable their judging, which is very important especially when competing in the lower classes, if you want to encourage the correct way of working.

Every breed has a `breed standard ` which is set out by the Breed clubs and confirmed bt the KC ( I think im right!) . but it how each indiviual interpretets the standard. Some judges place more on movement than others ,some place Type at the top of there list , 8) some HATE dogs that `pit a pat` when moving , when the standard calls for low . daisy cutting action :- " Some like longer cast dogs , it goes on and on , . Not quite an exact science like Dressage , ( which I love to watch and did 1 competition when I was 40 and came 2nd :D ) Back to the subject .Want be Judges now do have to do lots of things to be passed to give Challenge Certificates but to judge at Open show level all you need to do is BE ASKED !

and anyway , who would want the same one winning week in week out ! Although it is gauling to win one week and the next not to be placed , but I presume that was against diffrent competition?

All most of us ask is that you judge the DOGs fairly o:)

One of our older respected breeders used to say; Dont just tell us what you won, tell us what you beat and how many were there.

I would add, cos Im getting on a bit too; Tell us what the weather was like, how your dog was behaving, how it was turned out, what the ring was like, if you had to stay the night before........................

What I love most of all is winning when I think I probably hav'nt got a hope, and finding a dog when Im judging that really excites me for lots of reasons.

Isn't this a bit oxy moronic?
