Success breeds success, cant keep the good uns down

Anchor doen't hold sway

By Matt Donlan

HALTON-based greyhound trainer Julie Bateson saw her chances of winning one of the biggest races in the sport sink on Saturday when her dog Teds Anchor ran fifth in the Scottish Derby.

The greyhound, part owned by Julie's husband Steve and four friends in a syndicate, went off as a 10-1 shot in the £25,000 race at Glasgow's Shawfield Stadium.

Julie, 48, who trains just five dogs, knew before the race that Teds Anchor - who is called Zak at home in the kennels - faced an uphill battle. He had qualified through the three-round competition and won his semi-final.

But Julie said: "It is absolutely fantastic to get to the final - it is a dream.

"Zak didn't know he wasn't the favourite and did his best in an excellent field."

The race was won by 7-4 joint favourite Fear Me with 3-1 shot Westmead Hawk in second. Teds Anchor completed the 480 metre course in 29.61 seconds Adds Julie: "We have come up against all the big trainers and showed that success on a small scale is possible. I think it's great for the sport.

"I started many years ago racing whippets and then we had racing greyhounds on the independent tracks.

"I have had a licence to race under the rules of the National Greyhound Racing Club for just 13 months so now have been taking on the best in the country at the biggest tracks."

P.S. We thought the same when we raced against any of julie's and Steve's dogs, they were always top notch and turned out for the race, Greyhounds gain is Whippet racings loss.
