I had been using nylon collars with fine half chains on Ellie & Holly as training collars only whilst out walking but noticed the half chain was "blackening" their necks.
So i changed to normal whippet leather collars, BUT being very fine coated i noticed these were rubbing a bald patch under their throats.
So i went to a show at the weekend & there was the usual stand selling whippet coats & collars etc, so i explained my problem & the very helpful chap sorted me out some very soft leather whippet collars that would not rub their fur away.
Soo, i put them on this morning & off we went. Not 10 minutes into the walk Holly my 5 and a half month old pup pulled on the lead & PING![Eek! ](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
I was left holding a lead with a D ring attached whilst Holly sped off into oblivion (w00t) .
Thankfully i managed to entice her back (thank god it wasn't Ellie as she would have been long gone) & saw the D ring had completely ripped free of the collar, so wondering how i could get her safely back to the car i decided to attach the lead to the sturdy looking brass buckle.
So off we set back to the car to retrieve a safe collar when a sudden tug & Holly took off like a bat out of a hell & i was left holding a lead with a collar dangling in 2 halves
.
20 minutes later i managed to catch her & had to take a collar off my IG who thankfully is very reliable & stays by me & put on her to get her back to the car.
It was 6am this morning so luckily really quiet & no nasty dogs about & although it took me a while to catch her, thankfully no harm was done BUT it could have been a different story, what if we had of been approaching a main road? She could have bolted straight out into the traffic & been dead by now.![Frown :( :(](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
These collars are made for whippets & surely on a 5 and a half month old pup should have been safe?
Please check any collars that you buy for strength to save an accident
I will not being using Ellie's one again either "just incase" & will be returning them to the very next show i go to.
