I have a young lurcher whose training is progressing nicely but he has a habit of

"scenting/sniffing" about, then he completly switches off. Somebody suggested

using Vick but I thought that this would burn his nose. I'm hoping to use him in obedience competitions so I would prefer not to use gadgets if possible, in case he

does it whilst competing. :(

Has anybody got any suggestions please?

Hi, I dont like the idea of using Vick. When you think how strong it is & then how much more sensitive a dogs sense of smell is. It would probably drive the poor dog mad having that smell right under his nose. :x

I'd try training in very small sessions ( 5-10 mins) and finish on a good note on your terms before he has the chance to get bored.

Good luck :luck:

I wouldnt worry too mutch the dogs only learning what his nose is for and his recall attention etc will get better with age.heres a little tip just before you go into competition take the dog out the way and chastise him i guarantee itll listen for the next half hour or so i won obediences all over the country with this method [makes em watch your eyes] its harder when you dont work the dog as theres not the same connection as when hunting .

How would you chastise the dog?? I would find it very hard to shout at my dog if she hadn't done anything wrong :( Surely this would just confuse her? I'd rather mess up completely than have my dog scared of me for no reason.

When my dog was younger she had me in tears a few times at agility shows cos she just wouldnt listen but as she got older it all clicked into place and we BOTH have fun. If I thought she didn't enjoy it I would stop tomorrow.

Mao, your dog is still young, you don't want to knock his confidence by shouting at him. You may win a few more rosettes but is it worth it?
