just thought id start up a new topic on kennel cough, maybe theres some newcomers in racing and dont realise u shud stay away if your dog gets the cough etc etc. this is really an advice thread.

i do have a question though, if your dog has had the kennel cough is it unlikely to get it again? reason i ask is last time about 3 years ago all mine got it apart from my 11 (@ the time) year old and she had had it as a puppy. just curious. none of mine have it @ the moment but the only ones who have never had it r the pups rio & gem.

I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure that kennel cough is like human flu in that there are different varieties/ mutations around each year - that's why dogs have to be vaccinated each year if they go to kennels etc. So in theory they could catch it again (unless it's a type they've already had but that's unlikely) :(

is there much of it about in the n/e ????????//

any good remedies.

ours got it 4 yr ago 2 days before scotland fortnight

gutted when we couldnt go.

i think youre right but get youre dogs vaccinated every year have the proper jabs and this stops most of it

I believe that infectivity with bordetella bronchiseptica is for 3 months............
I also believe it's transmissable through humans.........

Not all dogs suffering from kennel cough will have symptoms...

Vircon has some merit to dogs that have not been infected providing you know they've not been infected, however contracting what appears to be a very mild variant from racing a dog at the Championships and developing the disease anything between the 4-14 days after the champs seems a little like shutting the door after the horse has bolted.

Obviously the NNWRF have no power of cross-infection control at every race event across the country but it is a thoughtful gesture.

The people who should be worried is those who've ran anywhere within the last fortnight leading up to the champs because it's more likely your dog will be ill at the time of the champs.

With hindsight, the best thing to have done when this first happened (?someone's mentioned January) would of been to get every dog in racing deliberately infected because it is a very mild variant and will give a dog life long immunity against more hardier variants in the future.

Thought I might as well add my post from elsewhere to this thread. As the answers are already there i.e. dogs are infectious for 3 months and yes you can become infected with a different variant. However, the body is less likely to be overwhelmed next time round and some dogs may show no symptoms at all.

Kennel Cough went through a lot of dogs around the time of 2008 english derby. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if these dogs have showed no symptoms whatsoever and owners are completely oblivious to their dogs being infected.

Dogs with Kennel Cough don't all cough!

The biggest risk with a coughing dog is to the dog itself from exertion.

If your dog is coughing badly then you should have the common sense not to exert your dog.

However it's perfectly feasible some innocent person is going to get slated if their dog does so much as an ''ahem'' at the finish line and they genuinely had no idea their dog was infected.

Now unless everyone in whippet racing is going to stop running for 3 months, I suggest common sense applies and owners will do the best for their own dogs well being.

You didn't get ripped off though Carol. Having your vet examine Mickey was a sensible thing to do even if they did only suggest Benylin.

A mate of mine has said there's a bit of it going round the flapping tracks  hope it stays away from us whippiteers
