Help :(

A friends 10 month old labrador has been diagnosed with knee displaysia :( She has been told that she will have to be on a lead for the rest of her life, and has to have total rest for the next 4 months to limit the damage while she is still growing.

Has anyone any experience of this problem?

Surgery is an option but she doesnt know if this will mean Lilly can lead a normal life. Obviously she'll talk to her vet in more detail about it but if anyone has any advice I'll pass it on to her.

She'd rather Lilly had a shorter fun proper labrador life than a long one on the end of a lead.

The op is very straight forward, and normally VERY successful  ....... Glucosamine will also help ......... My Mums old rescued puppy farmed lab lived to be a fit 12 year old with elbow, hip and knee dysplasia ...

i have a lab (saffi) who is 14mths old his brother( rooney) was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at approx 9 mths old. he had the op (shaved off a bit of the hip bone and replaced it back in the socket ). We was really concerned that the vet alowed him home the same day as his op but that night he was walking around reasonably well considering what he had just been through and within a few days was much better. After a couple of weeks it was obvious he was not in the pain he had previous and within 2 mths was able for the first time to romp around with saffi, He is now 5mths after the op able to give saffi a good run for his money though is not as fast obviously and is not allowed to run too hard. Strength wise it appears as though he is compensating with his front strength for the lack of strength in his hind quarters. we play it by ear for the lengths of walks he has and just watch for signs of tiredness. Was the best option for him as he is now a much happier contented dog, with a really good quality of life.

I must add though that his operated leg is now shoter than his other leg (just a little) but this was done on purpose to take the pressure off the operated leg .

otherwise absolutely no lasting damage . hth :))

the pics show both saffi (golden) and rooney(black) as u can see having great fun
