Just wondered how we differ around the country in our lamping outings ?

Some folk will only go out on drizzle and light wind nights, very dark, no moon.

Keep the beam on a squatter and walk up to it.

Flick the beam until close then slip the dog.

Strobe the light if the quarry gets close to any cover.

Interested in other lampers method, I bet we learn something from each other.

Any tips out there ?

Mike.

mike my methods of lamping may differ from everyone else's. From experience i see no point in going lamping on a still night the windier the better, i'm not too bothered about the moon if there is cloud cover.

It was blowing a gale up here last night but the moon was 80% full with cloud cover. I took jess and the pup out but kept the pup on the lead at all times. The rabbits squatted like harvest rabbits, jess picked 6 up without running them . we ended up with 11 and a charlie.

My method of lamping is simple i walk into the field and lamp from the hedge out with the red filter on. Just a quick shine is needed as you will tend to spook them if you leave it on a while. I then select one flip the filter up and walk steady towards it without the lamp on. When i think i'm near it i flip the lamp on and give the dog a run. If the rabbit is heading for the hedge i shake the lamp a little and the rabbit usually slows a little, enough for the dog to catch, once caught it's lamp off wait for the retrieve and start again.

If you enjoy lamping and your dogs enjoy it thats all that matters. there is no rules carved in stone if your methods work carry on using them.

looking forward to meeting you at the midland
