Hi

Our boy is nearly 5 months old and has been completely housetrained since the first few weeks we had him, 3 months ago. The past week I've been on jury service, so have been out all day instead of at home. My husband works at home so The Boy should have had the company he is used to, but unfortunately and unusually my husband has had to go out to several meetings, and The Boy has had to Grandparents for a several days in a row - but back home in the evenings etc.

He seems to quite like being with Granny, as they have an old dog and they rub along ok, and Granny gives him biscuits, but unfortunately yesterday he did a puddle on the carpet near their front door, at the bottom of the stairs. He was probably lurking to be let out and didn't actually bark, and so they didn't notice until later. After bringing him home, we were then busy with our daughter's teatime/bedtime etc and whilst we were busy doing that, he weed on our staircarpet, half-way up the stairs - something he has NEVER done - no whining to be let out, no barking, just peed then went back to bed. Today, my husband was at home all day with him, and he had a completely normal day - normal local walks etc, it was only me who was out. And then this evening he peed on the staircarpet AGAIN!! This isn't marking wee, it's huge puddles.

I can understand that he's a bit confused because of the change to the routine, but he has seemed in all other respects to cope well with it - he has had his usual food and mealtimes, and he loves walks with Granny's dog, and he loves her sofa and biscuits. He hasn't cried when we've left him there, and has been fine if they've left him for a short time too.

The only other time he peed inside for no apparent reason ie. no whining/barking to be let out, no warning - was back in October when the weather broke and it rained a lot, so he held on for as long as possible then peed on the mat. Is he just being a so and so because the temperature has plummeted and its freezing outside? Or is this something related to anxiety and change of routine? He seems absolutely fine in himself otherwise. Do other whippets regress in the housetraining with changes in the weather?!

We're hoping to go away for a couple of nights this weekend so he was due to stay with Granny again, but now we're not sure what to do. Do we need to stay home and make everything as stable and normal as possible, or are we overreacting?

My Sox had a bit of a regression at around the same age if I remember rightly!

The golden rule is "go back to basics" :) Start taking him outside again every hour and asking him to do his "thing" in whatever way you trained him to do it and reinforce the good behaviour praise and ignore the bad if he goes in the house.

You might have to get your "whippet sitters" to continue with this training whilst you are away in order to be consistent.

Don't worry, he will soon be back on the right track

I agree, just go back to basics and keep letting him out every couple of hours. Once he is back in his routine he will be fine. Maya my iggy pup was housetrained and then she has had the odd accident when her routine was changed.

Since this has come on really suddenly, might be worth a vet check to make sure he doesn't have a urinary tract infection.

Like others said, probably just not wanting to go out in cold/wet and/or routine change, but c/ be medical too. good luck, and let us know how he's doing!

Hi everyone

Thanks for the reassurance, sorry it's been a while for me to reply. Things have been a lot better since I've been home, except two major relapses - cocked his leg against the bedroom door yesterday, I'm convinced it was because he was feeling left out and wanted to make a point - my daughter had been playing with him, then went off to do something else, and it was also his lunchtime - a protest? And then just now, he peed on the stairs again - I had my back turned for less than 30 seconds. I think maybe that was being caught short. We're going to go right back to absolute basics - restricted access to most of the house unless under constant supervision, regular visits to the garden whether he likes it or not. We thought we had it sorted until yesterday's and today's incidents! I don't think its an infection, as it is "isolated" incidents and always in the same place (apart from the door...)

We'll see...
