Peter has just let two of our whippets go to a pet home, they are both sisters and have never been seperated, this decision was made by peter. I now know how heart breaking it is to let a whippet go as I am sure everyone else who has had to do this must know as well. The man who lives in the same town as us came for both of them half an hour ago and already I have spilled more tears than I have done for years :b does everyone feel like this or is it just me being soft :b

I cried too, especially when they drove away and their little heads staring at you as they go. GULP!! :'( The thing is though, when you start getting little photos and letters about their progress, you realise that there are people out there who love their dogs just as much as you do. :) One lady who bought a pup off me had lost her whippet to old age 18 months previous and when she seen the pups she just started crying with joy. Dogs can bring so much happiness to peoples lives so take comfort in the fact you are sharing this with others. :)

I've never let any of my own go, it'd be a killer for me - they're my babies. I've let some of my grandads go (he's a bit tougher than me anyway) but the last 2 were rehomed because he became i'll and didn't feel able to do them justice by giving them the work and exercise they needed (they were only 2 and litter mates) they now live the life of riley with a woman who has acres and acres and runs a livery yard.

It's something we just have to accept goes on in whippet racing and showing, the dogs are there to do a job and if they aren't "up to scratch" people do let them go to pet homes, so long as they go to good homes and are cared for well then it doesn't bother me - what bothers me is when dogs get passed from pillar to post.

If this fella lives in the same village then i'm sure you haven't seen the last of them, they are both together - i'm sure they'll be fine!

awww pat no its not just u i was gutted when peter gave whizziwig away to a pet home! u will feel like that for a few weeks. i remember when peter gave whizziwig away i was goin out 4 a mates birthday and i was gutted all night! one of my mates said yeah but people who take whippets as pets know exactly wot they want otherwise they wud just go 2 a cat n dog shelter etc and that made good sense to me @ the time. im sure the guy whose took them both will love them just as much as u do . :huggles:

Personally i think pet homes are better for the racing dogs that dont make it, than hanging onto them, for yourself because you would be upset.

A couple of reasons...

When you go racing or training, with other dogs you own thats showing good racing form or can run well you tend to leave them behind or give the races more attention..

But i suppose this depends on the person ,i see good capable racing dogs left on the settee at home because there owners are either to lazy, or more interested in other things, than training them and prove the dogs worth...

SHAME REALLY

Yes Dee it dos happen. It really hurts letting a dog go. We kept Boson when he couldnt race due to a very bad leg injury, he was a happy chap and a loving pet, thats how Boson wanted it. But hurt or not we do try and find a racer who wants a club dog if its not fast enough for open racing. Thay are born to run and it can be cruel to just leave them on the settee. If you need a pet home I think the best way is to go though a rescue, no matter how well you may think you know the new owners, veting a new home is so important. We found that out once the hard way :(

 Update :b

Well I was so upset when they went :( so I decided to go and see that they were ok, so off I went to the mans house and was trying to get through the gate when the window opened and the mans wife shouted " what do you want" I said Oh I have come to make sure the whippets are ok, whippets she said what whippets  i said Oh does so and so live here yes she said but he aint got no whippets  just then coming down the road was the man, so I collared him and said where are the whippets, " oh he said they are in the kennels down the road at my mates " wutttttttttttttt said I  show me, and there they were behind the bars of a kennel, so I went home and told Peter to fetch em back and he did so because he too was upset  they are at home now where they will stay......

But i suppose this depends on the person ,i see good capable racing dogs left on the settee at home because there owners are either to lazy, or more interested in other things, than training them and prove the dogs worth...

I totally agree but then as you say it depends on the person and on that persons circumstances doesn't it :teehee:

This wasn't aimed at anyone in particular

nice one Pat for taking the touble to double check, I,m one of the soft ones when it comes to animals they stay until they go out naturally and they all get treated as good as each other

it's so sad that you felt you had to re-home your whippets and I'm glad you have them back now, I for one could NEVER, NEVER re-home my gorgeous dogs (well maybe Indi :p joking) they mean too much to me

even if I was in a wheelchair not able to move I could never re-home them, I'd find a way of giving them the excercise they needed and lots of love as always too, they are a huge part of my family now and forever!!

I'd rather re-home my kids (w00t) :- " any offers?? :p (w00t) (w00t)

:( Im in a wheelchair and it broke my heart parting with Millie but it was the best thing I could do for her sake, if our footpaths where safe to use in a wheelchair she would still be with me today

I feel the same Tina :)) that is about the whippets lol, thanx for all your kind words and I now know I can not just let them go as so many people have had to in the past, pauline I know you love millie and was heart broken when she had to be rehomed but as you say it was the best for her and that after all is the most important thing...... if I was to find a brilliant home for the two whippets then maybe I would consider again but untill then at home they will stay with us :huggles:

We kept Boson as a pet he was really happy, the point I am trying to make is that we had to rehome Millie as a pet. A very good home came up and whippet racing freinds of ours even know the couple who wanted Millie and agreed it would be a brilliant home. Millie was really happy she had a loving home and two boys to play with. We got phone calls , photos, letters, everything you could want. Then one day the calls stoped. I knew something was very wrong and I had to get Ken to ring to find out what was going on.

Millie had broken a leg and it was a nasty break. Instead of phonimg me to let me know thay did not have the money spare with 2 young boys for a large vet bill Millie was put to sleep.

I would of paid the bill for them or had Millie back.

If I ever had to find another pet home I would go though "whippet rescue" this is the only way your whippets can be checked on once thay leave you.
