so what is a Libyan Desert Hound and what is it like?

have I perhaps heard of it by another name? (is it a Sloughi)

came across this breed on Saga pet insurance breeds list (by the way there is no listing for mixed breeds, though there is a listing for lurchers)

the only other internet mention of Libyan desert hound I found via search was on Pet Plan insurance webpages

Sloughi's native range is said to be Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya so I suppose a hound from the Libyan desert ought to be a Sloughi, but Google produces no results for Libyan Desert Hound.

Azawkh also comes from the region, south from Libya, both being dogs of nomads (who even today so not recognise country borders) it could be either of these two breeds or there maybe another breed, I would expect it to look pretty simular to both these 2 breeds.

Emmm, I'v know breeders not to be able to tell a slight mixed breed from the pure bred, never mind vets...so kick myself every time i look at my bank statement with the pet plan premium for a pure bred rather than what I should have presented as a mixed breed :(

No... breed you ask of is not known to me...but so are a lot of things

Will see what the more knowledgeable come up with. :luck:

that's a really good point, especially for us pet owners who wouldn't have to prove our dogs ancestory (sp?) for the show ring or racing club

I'll have to remember that should I get another sight hound one day - like I'm ever going to be without one again (w00t)

From the pictures, Sloughis appear to be quite beautiful. I have come across two young adult sloughi males currently in rescue and there are some warnings given that you have to prepared to deal with the sloughi temperament.

Here is a detailed page about caring for a rescued sloughi:

http://sloughi.tripod.com/SFAA/rescue/whattoexpect.html

one of the dogs I came across on-line is Josef in Ireland:

look him up at the http://www.irishanimals.com website

the other is Cesare in Bath:

if you go to see and/or rehome either of them, let us hear the news!

hi alba, the sloughi and the azawakh are not as domestic a breed as what we have here in the uk. they are more used to a semi wild existence with the nomadic tribesman of north africa. i was looking at a pup from the first azawakh litter born in the uk, but when the breeder twigged i wanted the pup for coursing she dropped me like a lead balloon. do a search under saluki of arabia or the saluki centre in arabie, their you should find some links to what you are looking for. regards sparky
