My poor Lizzie has a corn on her pad and is booked to have it removed on Monday - the vet said it is important that they get right down to the root and remove it all.

I dont know how long she will need to be rested but she is a very quiet girl so a cozy couch with a quilt and she will be happy

:luck: Good luck with this - corns are painful and quite common in greyhounds and whippets. My whippet has had two, and I have taken him to Andrew Bartholomew - brilliant greyhound vet in Oxford - he takes them out right there on the table, but he really knows what he is doing and has great success with them.

After taking them out, he suggests no road walking for several weeks, and soaking the foot in very salty warm water for 10 minutes twice daily, and they scrubbing it with a soft scrubbing brush. (With corns, they are fine on soft ground, but lame on hard ground).

Hope Lizzie recovers well - I am impressed that your vet actually recognised that it was a corn, a lot of vets never see them as other breeds just don't seem to get them. It's apparently because there is very little fat in a greyhound or whippet's pads that they are so prone.

:luck:

PS He also has extra zinc added to his food to help thicken his pads.

Thanks for the info Beth. I had no idea whippets and greyhounds were prone to corns! (w00t)

My sisters Whippet had the same thing. She rested her for a week,as quite a large dressing,as needed to be well padded, but was running around as normal after two weeks.

Hope all goes well today Anita - these doggies are such a worry.

Give me a ring later and let me know... :huggles:

Thinking of you both today & sending healing hugs to you & Liz :huggles: :luck:

Good luck for today. :luck:

Does anyone have a photo of what a corn looks like on a pad. I would be interested to see? I sometimes wonder if Fred has one, but the vets have said no. Does it hurt if you press the corn/pad quite hard?

Poor Lizz, sending her lots of :luck: & :huggles: for her op...which was at 1pm,and if I know Lizz she will love all the attention and the chance to snuggle on the sofa with a warm quilt. :huggles: :huggles:

Hope Lizzie recovers well from this op. :luck: My Stan has been lame on his front leg for a while, we thought there was something in it and have spent lots of time bathing it in salt water, thought I got something out but am wondering whether this was just a secondary something lodged in the mark on his bad.

Now have s feeling this maybe a corn, he is only lame on hard ground and shingle etc. I would really appreciate it Anita if you could provide me with an update on how Lizzie recovers. Does the corn look like a small circle with an indent?

Good luck Lizzie :huggles:

She is home, i got her at 2 - she is fast asleep on the couch on a quilt with a blanket over her, they had to cut quite deep to get to the root, she has her foot very well padded which comes off Friday and then back to the vets in a week for a check up.

Jo Liz had been lame for a while, i kept checking her shoulder, leg, feet but couldnt see anything, then when we was away last week she was fine on the beach and grass but really lame on concrete or a hard surface. As soon as i got home I took her to the vet and all you could see was a dry cracked bit of the pad, but that pad was harder than her other pads and when the vet squeezed it you could see the circle.

If it is a corn I was told to get it removed ASAP - i hope Stan hasnt got one but it sounds similar with him having trouble on hard ground

Glad she is home okay and all snuggled up :huggles:

Yes Stan has been lame for quite a while, thought it was his shoulder, but nothing - there was a small mark on his pad and I kept soaking it etc Now a couple of weeks on he is still lame on hard ground and the pad is much harder and the circle has got bigger. Hmm better get him back to the vet

Hope Lizzie recovers quickly

Glad Lizz is home and all went well Anita,I bet she is a model patient will make the most of her recovery on the sofa under the quilt! ;)

Lots of :huggles: to her for a speedy recovery.

Oh that does sound very like what Lizzie was like - poor Stan I hope it isnt

Ill let you know how she gets on

So pleased that Lizzie is home and doing well. :huggles:

Best of luck for Stan, Jo. :luck: :luck:
