am I right or wrong in thinking that today's showdogs are tending to have longer straighter backs than we used to see?

(some of the ones that I thought a bit long in the back are very nice otherwise and are winnning prizes)

I think it's a bit like the difference between show and racing greyhounds

Do the longer backed whippets still run as fast?

I think times have changed quite a bit in the ring and not just with Whippets,I did'nt show in 60/70's but from looking at pictures of Whippets back then, there are some significant changes and one of those seems to be the length over the loin, they should still have a slight rise but it should not leave the dog looking "wheel backed",which again was (or seems to be from pics) the trend then.

For me,I much prefer a longer cast Whippet, but I suppose it is all down to personal preference and what you find aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

I can't speak for the racing fraternity, but I know it does'nt seem to make much difference in speed on a straight line, having a slightly longer dog, where the slightly shorter, smaller dog comes into it's own is on the turn and it will usually be able to shake off the longer dog no problem.
