 I was off work today and was just setting off for a walk with the dogs when my son pointed out a large Akita running loose on the street :( I went back into the house and watched it chase a lady up the street - frightening her to death(she jumped over a wall in the end  ), It kept jumping up her and getting hold of her hand. I rang the local dog warden and I explained that I live near a primary school and although its half term, they still have holiday clubs etc. which were due to come out and explained I was worried about the dog.

He told me he couldnt possibly come out at such short notice and that if I had rang this morning they possibly would have been able to have come out by this afternoon??? (IS IT ME?) How would I have known the dog would be running around the streets? Whilst talking to him on the phone the dog had run down the street to where a man was walking along, it jumped up him and completely floored him! I was horrified, the man was well shook up and ran off as soon as the dog was distracted by traffic. I ended up ringing the police as advised by the dog warden but didnt see anyone turn up....

What should you do in this situation. I am used to dogs but I certainly wouldnt have approached this one. My son says there is a girl aged about eleven who lives on the next street and he thinks it belongs to her dad but she lets it out. I did see her in the street but when the dog went towards her she screamed and ran off!

It makes me so mad. Its not the dogs fault it needs looking after properly and training, but loads of kids play in the streets round here- I was scared for them. A few months ago I saw this same girl with a beautiful german shepherd pup walking round the streets and I told her to look after it well... Ive not seen it since  obviously this one has replaced the GS pup. Sorry this post is so long but Ive had this dog on my concience since then. Should I have risked getting bitten and tried to catch it?

I don't think I would have risked trying to catch the dog. Akitas can be pretty unpredictable, I must admit I am a bit wary of them. Apologies to any Akita owners, I know I shouldn't generalise & there are probably millions of lovely ones out there but I would still hesitate to try.

I think you did the right thing by phoning the dog warden just a pity they weren't much help.

If you spot it out again could you perhaps try to follow it in a car to see where it

goes back to?

The other week there were 2 young weedy looking boys hanging on for dear life to a big Akita in the local park. It was on a lead but these 2 lads were obviously trying to avoid every other dog walker in the park. Not easy on a nice spring morning. If the dog had managed to shake them off it looked like it would have gone on the run in the park, they wouldn't have been able to control it.

It sounds to me typical of a young Akita wanting to play more than being aggressive - he's obviously desperate for attention, and not neccesarily grtting it poor thing - they tend to play by 'holding' your hand with their mouths and have no idea that jumping up is not a good idea when you're that size!

They are certainly not a breed to be roaming the streets
