A couple of months ago I queried on here about recurrent Bronchitis in my dog Milo. I decided to take him to a different vet yesterday after it returned for the 3rd time this year alone, and was sick of my vet just giving a course of antibiotics. Today they xrayed his chest and flushed a sample out of his lungs which suggests he has lung worm. It's not something I've heard a lot of, and now know it's not actually covered by a lot of wormers (As I worm my boys every two months). I'm going to pick him up in an hour, but am thankful now that he is finally going to get treated, the results should be back by friday, but they have given him a wormer to cover and some antibiotics. I'm just worried now on things Ive been reading on line about how it can cause lung/heart disease if left untreated and he's been suffering with this for well over a year!

Just wondered if anyone had had experience of this, cheers x

I posted a thread Advantage lung worm treatment in April. The drug is actually called Advocate. My dogs are treated with it 9 months of the year march - Nov. It prevents lungworm, fleas, ticks, round, whip and tape worm.

It is expensive but .......................

Try searching for the thread Advantage lung worm on the site

Lungworm is rife in Cornwall- has been here now for 5yrs plus, and has now spread nationwide. It is spread by slugs, snails, frogs, and foxes. Your dog doesnt actually need to eat the slug/ snail whatever- the larvae can sometimes be found in the slimy trail they leave, (so can be picked up via a toy or similar that a snail may have crawled over.) Also from puddles, etc.

As Eve has posted, Advocate is a spot on treatment that protects against lungworm, as well as roundworm, fleas, and mange. If you feed raw it is best to worm with a separate wormer like Drontal every 3 months or so, as it doesnt cover tapeworm.

Its cheaper to buy online, but you need a vets prescription. Hope your dog is ok :luck:

Pippywhippet is correct. Although Advocate does not treat tapeworm (it treats all the others).

My vet said that tape worms are ,very rare in dogs unless fed a diet that includes quite a lot of raw meat especially pork. His recommendation was Drontal once a year given during one of the months that Advocate was not being given (less drug overload on the dog). Advocate is supposed to be given monthly year round (manufacturers recommendation) but in Scotland, once the frosts appear, the slugs and snails vanish and my vet agreed that the risk is very low at that time. I perfer to give the dogs bodies a rest November - February inclusive.

Agree with all these posts. My dogs are treated with Advocate for lungworm as we have had confirmed cases in this area and I know there was certainly one fatality. Good luck to Milo and I hope he makes a full recovery.

Been to vets for a booster vaccine today for Alfie.

He says lungworm has become such a problem of late that he is considering checking all dogs booked in for routine ops.

One of the symptoms of lungworm is excessive or persistent bleeding :(
