Lurcher Umbilical Hernia

My 12 week old lurcher pup has an umbilical hernia which the vet says she will repair when she is spayed. Can anyone give me any more information about this. Does it cause her pain? will there be any other problems. She will not be a working dog.

So long as there are no complications with the hernia it won't cause her any pain. The main danger with hernias is if they are big enough to allow a loop of intestine to slip through and then become strangulated, so you need to keep a careful eye on it to make sure there are no changes in appearance etc, also be aware this might be the cause if your puppy suddenly becomes unwell or starts vomiting etc.

If the hernia is very small this shouldn't be an issue, but if you are worried perhaps you could ring the vet who examined her and run through any questions you have?

Hernias are usually repaired at the same time as spaying, as the spay incision would be in the same place as the hernia so there is only one wound to worry about. Hernias are often inherited so bitches with hernias shouldn't be bred from.

so what happens if you have got a dog with one should you not use him for stud then
