Hi - I have a 2.5-year-old rescued pedigree whippet. He has a strong prey drive, but at 23 inches and 17kgs he is too big for whippet racing. I was wondering whether he would enjoy - or be eligible for - lure coursing events? I would very much appreciate any information that you experts out there can give me!

Some events cater for KCreg whippets not exceeding 21 inches. Clearly you are outside the scope of those criteria. Such clubs do though often put a stake on for lurchers/non ped whippets etc where your dog could compete. Our club EAWCC does from time to time, as described. It all depends upon demand. If there are sufficient takers, I can arrange to put a stake on.

Other clubs on here eg South West LC and the club operated by nigelmcfc and pennymeadow whippets are attracting huge interest and will be worth your while getting in touch with. PM strike whippets. She's a good old bird (w00t) :luck:

Thanks Jane - sorry, I am probably being very thick, but please bear in mind that I know nothing whatsoever about lure coursing! The topic you have pointed me to seems to be a discussion between people who are 'in the know' about a particular activity weekend. I can't find details of where this meeting takes place, or where the club meets, or dates of meetings. Ideally, I would like to come along and watch a meeting before deciding whether or not to enter Merlin for anything. Is this possible?

Sorry to burden you with questions!

Hi Eleanor, I'm not that far up the M5 from you :D ...... You can run any kennel club Whippet at the BSFA ...

BSFA lure coursing

This is held in Newbury on a monthly basis from Spring - Autumn ..... and you can trial or complete :D

The South West Lure Coursing Club has just been set up and this will be our first attempt at holding a meeting, but we've got alot of experience between us so fingers crossed :sweating: ......Its going to be held in Taunton on the 26th of this month, you are more than welcome to come and watch, and if we have enough time you may even get a trial :) .....If not racing clubs like West Somerset and South Cotswolds (Cotswolds being your closest) will let you go and trial and lure train an over sized Whippet ;) .....If you want contact numbers I can PM them too you ......I hope this helps :D Hannah.

PS - Your boy will love it
