Hi

I have just joined this great site, and am so pleased to find so many whippet lovers!

We have 2 lively boy whippets (Sully & Storm) aged 16 months, and we're thinking of taking them lure coursing. We live in Leicester, can anyone tell us of the nearest/best venue for us to try. What age do they have to be to join in, and do I have to train them in any way first? They are both pedigree although we only have papers for one.

One of our boys (Storm) has a very strong chase instinct which at the moment he can occasionally be quite aggressive, if he offers a dog to chase him and it does run, he'll usually chase after it, trying to bite its bum! (Does anybody elses whippet do this) Obviously although he hasn't done anybodys dog any harm it doesn't go down to well. Will lure coursing help him find an outlet for this or make him worse?

Any help would be much appreciated. :)

I can't offer any advice on whereabouts of lure chasing clubs - my dogs do lure chasing, but we call it racing :D

But as for your dog's behaviour when running with another dog - yes, this is perfectly natural although not all dogs do it. However once their interest is grabbed by a moving object they should, and usually do, lose all interest in the other dog. If the dog persists in "nobbling" its competitor then you are going to have to find a way to train that part out of the dog. Good luck with that - there are as many prefered methods/solutions as there are people with dogs! Most racing club members will be pleased to offer advice on this - and probably lure coursing ones as well, although as I said I can't think of any personally. :))

I don't have high enough moderator rights to move this, but if you re-post in the lure coursing section you may get a better response :)

Tia likes to try and bite their bum when chasing a dog (w00t)

Sorry I posted this is wrong area, but thanks for moving it.

Have I got this right?

So lure chasing is the same as racing, which is on a track.

Lure coursing is also chasing but is in an open field.

In both cases the dogs chase a plastic bag.

Or am I confused?

Trac (sorry not sure how to quote your reply) does Tia do this when out on a normal walk? Does it worry you or can you recall her quite easily?

yes she does it on normal walks, sometimes it's worring as she gets carried away,i think its just her way of saying chase me, she will never do it to a little dog she is always wary of small dogs as she knows they can run under her & damage her.

Hi Abi.

The lure can be made of anything, carrier bag, onione sack, bit of fur (real/fake) anything realy it's just somthing for them to chase.

Lure Coursing is where the dogs chase around a course with turns made useing rollers.

Racing is normaly run either on a straight track or around a smmooth U shaped bend.

what area are you in.
