MADDY
**UPDATED: 6TH DECEMBER 2012**
Location: Foster home in Norfolk, UK.
Maddy is a gorgeous 2 year old ex-racing girl who, after just 3 races, was already deemed not good enough for the track and was in danger of being put to sleep. Luckily now she has a second chance at things and is going to be such a fabulous family dog.
Maddy is a slender black girl who is 26” to the shoulder but very narrow. She can curl up very small on the sofa! She has a petite little face with ears that can be a bit wild at times, and her black coat is going to be just stunning since she gets a good healthy sheen to it. Maddy has been in a foster home now for about 2 months.
~ Personality ~
Maddy is a super affectionate little girl who is always ready for some lovin’. She adores people and is always, always happy to see you. Now that she’s in a foster home, she’s soaking up all the fuss and attention and it’s obvious that she feels very lucky to be surrounded by people 24/7. She is a playful, curious, very happy young dog who is definitely ready and waiting for her forever family.
~ In the Home ~
Maddy has settled wondrously into the home life despite having grown up in kennels. She has been housetrained since day 1, and is ok to be left with her foster brother, a greyhound, for company. With a bit of training she could adapt nicely to being left completely alone, too. As she is still a young dog, she can at times get a bit bored and require someone to play with her. She also has her mad moments of garden zoomies that are great fun to watch. But once she’s tired out, Maddy settles very well in the evenings and is also perfect during the night.
Maddy is a bright little girl with a great potential to learn and work with her family. She already knows an array of basic commands, knows her name, comes to a whistle and even knows her foster parent’s names, going to the correct one when asked! Her foster brother is teaching her how to play with toys, as she’d never seen them before, and she is now starting to play. She also has that very greyhoundy habit of ‘stealing’ certain items to be stored away for safekeeping, especially items of clothing, though she doesn’t chew or destroy them. Because she is at that adolescent age, Maddy does sometimes like to have ‘selective hearing’, but we expect this will lessen as she matures and slowly develops a close bond with her family. Having a few tasty treats in your pocket is certainly no harm either!
As already mentioned, Maddy ADORES people and is always very welcoming to anyone coming into her home, be they strangers or not. She won’t make a very good guard dog, but is guaranteed to make any visitor feel welcome! At the same time, she doesn’t smother newcomers either and after a big, enthusiastic hello she is happy to settle down and snooze.
~ Other Animals ~
Maddy is very good with other dogs of all sizes and really does enjoy their company. She has learned a huge amount from her foster brother, another greyhound. In the past she has lived amiably with a terrier, and is generally polite at meeting all other dogs when out. She is also mannerly and waits her turn at mealtimes. She can get a bit confused when another dog walks past her without saying hi, making her turn on the lead to look back at them after they’ve passed, but we’re sure she’ll soon realise that not every dog wants to say hi. She is not suitable to live with cats and will eye up any small furry she happens to see when on walks.
~ Out and About ~
Maddy is very well behaved when out, and really just has a few areas that need tweaking before she’s a perfect model hound. If the area is completely new, she can have a few nervy minutes of head turning before settling down nicely. She follows the lead of her greyhound foster brother, who is very calm, so she has an excellent role model to learn from.
In general, Maddy walks like a gem on the lead and travels perfectly in the car. She would be suitable to have offlead in safe areas, away from public roads, once she has settled in to her new home and gotten to know her new parents.
~ Greyhounds as Pets ~
In general greyhounds are calm, mannerly dogs that are well used to being handled. They can fit very well in to a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly.
Maddy is going to be a really fun-tastic family pet for whomever gives her space in their lives. She would fit a range of home types and is very adaptable provided she gets to have ‘mad zoomies’ in a safe area a couple times a week. She is bouncy, happy, inquisitive and full of fun so would be a great dog for children or teenagers to teach her tricks and play with. Maddy also loves other dogs and could live very happily with a canine friend or three. The only word of caution is to try avoid getting whiplash from her constantly wagging tail!
~ Where Am I? ~
Maddy is being fostered in Norfolk, UK. She can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you will be required to travel to her in Norfolk to meet/collect her.

~~ KERRY GREYHOUNDS UK ~~
Kerry Greyhounds UK is a small voluntary organisation that is based in Norfolk, England. It focuses on rehoming unwanted Irish greyhounds and lurchers, as huge numbers are bred in Ireland each year and homes are few and far between. KGUK operates through a network of volunteers spread over Ireland and the UK. We can look after approximately 30 dogs at any one time in both kennels and foster homes.
Each dog is neutered, vaccinated, & microchipped before being adopted (unless stated otherwise).
We assess the suitability of all home offers, and we have homed greyhounds in all corners of the UK. If interested in one of our hounds, please visit our website’s Adoption Page: http://s300889640.websitehome.co.uk/uk/adoption.html for information and instructions on our homing procedures. Once you have filled in and returned the application form, we will then contact you via phone or email to discuss adopting one of our hounds in more detail.
